Aliso Niguel was only five minutes into its game with Rancho Alamitos when it delivered the night’s first punch. Unfortunately for Rancho Alamitos, it turned out to be a knockout.

The Wolverines hit Rancho Alamitos senior quarterback John Frank as he threw a pass and knocked him unconscious. Left with an inexperienced sophomore quarterback, Rancho Alamitos was no match for Aliso Niguel’s defense and wound up losing, 14-0, Friday night at Aliso Niguel High.

Frank, a three-year starter who is less than 300 yards shy of becoming the school’s all-time leading passer, left the game and was taken to a nearby hospital. Frank, who suffered a mild concussion and a bruised jaw, gave the Vaqueros a balanced offense.

Without Frank, the Vaqueros played with sophomore John Parrish, who had played only two games at the junior varsity level. Aliso Niguel quickly caught on to the Vaqueros’ one-man attack of Leo Kosi and started stacking the line with 10 players.

Kosi managed 96 yards in 32 carries, but they were the toughest 96 yards he’ll ever gain. Parrish tried throwing three passes. He badly missed his receivers on two passes and he was sacked for a 13-yard loss on the other attempt.

“When we realized [Parrish] was a sophomore, we didn’t think they’d throw any passes,” Aliso Niguel Coach Joe Wood. “They don’t throw much anyway. They like to play that smash-mouth type of football.”

Rancho Alamitos Coach Doug Case said it was worth a try.

“We’ve won games by just running the football before,” Case said.

Backup tailback Mike Hanlyn was the only other Vaquero to carry the ball and he lost two yards. Sophomore fullback David Vickers, who gained 80 yards in six carries last week, played much of the game but did not touch the ball.

“Leo Kosi’s our tailback and I didn’t see much point in giving it to anyone else,” Case said.

On three occasions in the second half, the ball never reached Kosi’s hands on pitch plays. Each time, Aliso Niguel recovered the fumble. Aliso Niguel capitalized on the first fumble and put the game out of reach with its second touchdown, a two-yard run by Trent Perley that was set up by 31-yard screen pass from Scott Nemeth to Cory Chandler. The touchdown came with 11 minutes 39 seconds left in the game.

Aliso Niguel scored first with 3:50 left in the first half on a diving 20-yard catch by Andrew Washburn in the corner of the end zone. Rancho Alamitos dropped to 0-2.

Aliso Niguel’s defense has not given up a touchdown in the Wolverines’ two victories. Last week’s touchdown by Dana Hills was scored on a kickoff return.
