Cleveland High’s Junior Brignac didn’t do much to squash a quarterback controversy when he made a diving catch to snare a 34-yard touchdown pass from Jared Mills midway through the third quarter of Friday night’s nonleague game against Reseda.

The points proved to be the decisive margin as the Cavaliers defeated the Regents, 20-13.

Problem is, Brignac, who is being recruited by several schools as a wide receiver, shared quarterback duties with Mills, a pattern that probably will continue after Friday’s results.

Brignac used his elusiveness to gain 49 yards in 15 carries, but was inconsistent throwing the ball, completing just two of seven passes.

The left-handed Mills, who played mostly in obvious passing situations, completed five of 11 for 103 yards, including the touchdown to Brignac.

“I don’t care where they play me, at quarterback or receiver,” Brignac said. “Just where I can help us score and win.”

Cleveland (2-0) won with a solid second-half defensive effort. The Cavaliers held Reseda (1-1) to 40 yards rushing in the second half, highlighted by a goal-line stand halfway through the fourth quarter.

With Cleveland leading, 20-13, Reseda quarterback Jamaal Washington connected with Armone Lochard on a 32-yard pass play for a first down at the Cleveland two-yard line.

Reseda tried four running plays up the middle, but Cleveland stopped all four and took over a foot from its goal line with eight minutes remaining.

Cleveland had built a 13-0 lead in the second quarter, taking advantage of an interception and a high snap on a Reseda punt.

On Reseda’s second possession, Cleveland defensive back Alex Kalinowski intercepted a Washington pass at midfield. Five plays later, Brignac scored from one yard. The big play in the drive was a 29-yard halfback option pass from Mills to Kalinowski.

“[The Mills option pass] was scripted so we could give Jared a chance to throw before he came in at quarterback,” Cleveland Coach Joe Santellano said. “We wanted them to think, ‘Wait, who is this guy?’ ”

Cleveland’s next possession started on the Reseda 30 after Tom Gutierrez kicked a three-yard punt following a bad snap.

On the next play, Brignac passed to Kalinowski, who jumped over Reseda defensive back Robert Granillo in the end zone for the touchdown.

Kalinowski finished with four receptions for 91 yards.

Reseda tied the score three minutes before halftime on long touchdown runs up the middle by Lochard (40 yards) and Andrew Campbell (83 yards).

Campbell finished with 118 yards in 10 carries and Lochard gained 93 in 13.
