Defense took most of the afternoon off, and Locke High’s Fred Lee staked his claim to being the City Section’s top running back with four touchdowns in the Saints’ 57-29 victory over Huntington Park on Friday at Locke.

Lee, a senior, ran over, around and past Huntington Park defenders for 169 yards in 13 carries and led the Saints (3-0) with touchdown runs of one, 16, 29 and 45 yards. After playing a supporting role to Sirr Parker last season, Lee has rushed for 561 yards and 10 touchdowns in three games.

“I’ve had a lot of great backs here at Locke, and [Lee] has to rank right up there near the top,” Coach E.C. Robinson said. “He has size and speed. One guy cannot bring him down. He’s a total back.”

With Parker--a two-time All-City selection--now a freshman at Texas A&M;, Lee, a 190-pounder, is making the most of his opportunity as the featured runner in Locke’s run-oriented offense.

“My coaches keep telling me to work hard in practice and in games and good things will come,” Lee said. “I know that I have speed to get to the outside, but I try to read my blockers first by bouncing inside and then outside.”

For the first two quarters, Huntington Park gave Locke all it could handle, thanks to the play of Richard Sosa, who rushed for 83 yards in eight first-half carries. Sosa scored the Spartans’ first touchdown on a five-yard pass from Gus Gomez, and Sosa’s 55-yard run set up Gomez’s 22-yard scoring pass to Diego Perez in the second quarter.

Still, Locke led, 15-13, at halftime, then got defensive in the third quarter, unleashing a pass rush headed by linebacker Chanick Jones, who had four of the Saints’ nine sacks. Jones scored the first touchdown of the second half when he sacked Gomez and forced a fumble into the end zone that he recovered for a 21-13 lead.

Lee’s second touchdown of the game stretched the Saints’ lead to 27-13, and Donte King added to that with a 52-yard interception return for a touchdown. He had also scored on a 73-yard run in the second quarter.

Locke--which outscored the Spartans, 28-0, in the third quarter--also scored on a 22-yard pass from Adam Kennabrew to Dartae Frierson before Lee finished the Saints’ scoring with two runs in the fourth quarter.
