ROUNDUP : After Moving Up to No. 1, Royal Wins Tournament

After moving up to No. 1 in the Southern Section Division IV water polo rankings last week, Royal High had to prove it deserved such an honor. After winning the San Luis Obispo tournament on Saturday, the Highlanders rest their case.

Royal (13-3) posted a 9-8 victory over second-ranked San Marcos, the team the Highlanders replaced at No. 1, in the semifinals and knocked off ninth-ranked San Luis Obispo, 13-8, in the final.

Bill Bruininga led the way with four goals against San Marcos and six in the final. He scored 13 goals as Royal won four games in two days. Goalie Kyle Finley had 13 saves against San Marcos and 10 against San Luis Obispo.

Four teams ranked in the Division IV top 10 took part in the nine-team pool-play tournament. Buena finished sixth and Agoura placed seventh.

In other high school water polo matches:

Crescenta Valley 27, Crespi 1--Every Falcon (13-1) scored in the nonleague match at Crescenta Valley in the team’s highest output of the season.

Joey Bennett led the scoring with six goals, including five in the first half as the Falcons built a 13-0 lead. The swarming Falcon defense had 33 steals. Goalies Andy Cushman and Brian Hasbrouck each had three saves.

Crespi’s Ricky Bejune spoiled the shutout bid with a fourth-quarter goal.

Burroughs 8, Alhambra 3--Damon Wiervillis scored three goals and goalie Mike Denny had 20 saves as the Indians (9-4) won the consolation championship in the Walnut tournament. Earlier in the day the Indians defeated La Puente, 15-1, as Alfonso Tucay and Wiervillis each scored four goals.

Newbury Park 19, Nordhoff 4--Scott Klawitter scored four goals as the Panthers (7-3) won the consolation championship of the Calabasas tournament. In the consolation semifinals, Tim Rhodes scored six goals in a 16-8 victory over Oxnard.

COLLEGE WATER POLO

Valley 13, Cypress 8--Theo Smits-Van-Oyen scored five goals, including three in a seven-goal third-period outburst as the Monarchs (9-2-2) won the Cypress tournament championship. Serjik Abramyan added four goals and goalie Gilbert Amiryan stopped 15 Cypress shots.

Earlier in the day, Valley defeated El Camino, 10-6, in the semifinals and downed Cerritos, 11-6, in the quarterfinals.

MEN’S SOCCER

Cal Lutheran 11, Caltech 1--Aleude Okohere scored three goals as the Kingsmen (5-4-1, 3-0) won a SCIAC match at Caltech.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Cal Lutheran 5, UC Santa Cruz 0--Jill Gallegos scored three goals and added an assist in a nonconference match at Cal Lutheran.

Kim Holeman scored twice for the Regals (9-1-1) and also had an assist. Gallegos scored on a pair of breakaways and converted a crossing pass for her third goal.

HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL

Royal d. Saugus, 15-7, 15-10--LaKesha DeBerry had nine kills, Carrie Swartz six and Heidi Ferguson added 15 assists as the Highlanders won the Royal tournament. DeBerry was named the tournament MVP, and Swartz and Ferguson were selected to the all-tournament team.

MEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY

Stanford Invitational--Brian Godsey of Cal State Northridge finished 92nd with a time of 26 minutes 45 seconds in a field of 176 runners in a 5,000-meter race. California’s Richie Boulet won the meet in 24:28.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

Stanford Invitational--Lori Miller of Northridge finished 73rd in 18:55 in a field of 162 runners. Mary Cobb of Stanford placed first in 17:10.

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Bell-Jeff Invitational--Hoover runners placed first and third in the top division, but the Tornadoes, the state’s top-ranked Division I team, placed second to McFarland, 53-57.

Hoover’s Dave Lopez won the event in 14 minutes 40 seconds, and teammate Felipe Montoro finished third in 15:14.

Stanford Invitational--Thousand Oaks placed eighth in the first division with 237 points. Josh Carolan came in ninth with a time of 16:16, followed by Todd Disney in 11th with 16:26.

In the second division, Burbank placed eighth with 262 points led by Kevin Harley, who finished 14th in 16:44.

Nordhoff won the third division with 60 points. Will Bernaldo ran third in 16:12. Victor Ochoa (16:21) and Omar Vega (16:22) placed seventh and eighth, respectively. Alemany finished 21st and La Canada 33rd among 40 teams.

In the fourth division, Oak Park tied with Salesian for third place with 116 points. Todd Jordan placed seventh in 17:11.

Mileh Fuson placed second in 16:13 as Taft placed eighth with 229.

GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Stanford Invitational--Santa Rosa’s Julia Stamps and Thousand Oaks’ Kim Mortensen, two of the country’s top runners, finished first and second, respectively, in a field of 154 in the top division. Stamps, the defending Foot Locker national champion, timed 17:19, and Mortensen ran 17:41.

Thousand Oaks, ranked ninth in the nation, finished third with 139 points.

In the third division, Nordhoff finished second with 98 points. Elaine Canchola tied for first with Kristen Gordon of Carondelet in 18:22. La Canada’s Sarah Ellis finished eighth in 19:51.

Bell-Jeff Invitational--Natalie Shaw won the top division race in 19:12 for first-place Simi Valley.
