PREP ROUNDUP : Newport Harbor Beats Santa Margarita in Girls’ Tennis

Newport Harbor, sixth-ranked in Orange County, won all nine singles sets and defeated seventh-ranked Santa Margarita, 13-5, in a Sea View League girls’ tennis match Thursday at Newport Harbor.

Emily Barker and Brooke Taylor swept in doubles, 6-3, 7-5, 7-6, to improve their record to 11-1 for Newport Harbor (10-4, 3-2).

Santa Margarita is 11-3, 2-3.

In another Sea View match:

Woodbridge 13, El Toro 5--Woodbridge remained undefeated as Natalie Exon swept 6-1, 6-0, 6-2, for the top-ranked Warriors (14-0, 5-0).

In the Century League:

Villa Park 15, El Modena 3--Faye DeVera swept at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-2, 6-0, to lead No. 4 Villa Park (12-0, 6-0).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Beach 16, Estancia 2--Sophomores Trini Jessoe and Kim Allen swept in doubles, 6-3, 6-2, 6-3, for fifth-ranked Laguna Beach (9-3, 5-0).

In the Sunset League:

Edison 16, Marina 2--Nichole Kojima swept her matches at No. 1 singles for Edison (7-4, 4-1), ranked No. 8 in Orange County.

In Century League boys’ cross-country:

El Modena 16, Villa Park 42--Ryan Emenaker, Zach Amos and Tim Allen each finished the three-mile course at Irvine Park in 15 minutes 46 seconds for ninth-ranked El Modena.

Santa Ana Valley 28, Foothill 30--Manuel Estrada finished first in 15:07 for No. 10 Santa Ana Valley (2-2). Estrada’s teammate Isidor Lucas was second in 15:49.

In the Golden West League:

Santa Ana 15, Westminster 48--Santa Ana’s Wess Morales led the Saints (4-1) with a victory in 15:32 on the three-mile course at Westminster.

Tustin 26, Saddleback 29--C.J. Marciales finished first in 15:14 for second-ranked Tustin (5-0).

In the Orange League:

Brea Olinda 15, Magnolia 44--Brea Olinda swept the top five spots, led by Mike Solis, who won in 15:58.

In the Sea View League:

Santa Margarita 18, Newport Harbor 39--Mike Murray won the three-mile race at the Castaways in 15:35 for sixth-ranked Santa Margarita (3-0), ranked sixth in the county.

In Century League girls’ cross-country:

El Modena 20, Villa Park 36--Jessica Dahlberg and Leslie Burton each finished the three-mile race at Irvine Park in 18:51 for top-ranked El Modena.

In the Orange League:

Brea Olinda 15, Magnolia 50--Visiting Brea, led by individual winner Michelle Richman, won its 18th consecutive dual meet victory.

In the Sea View League:

Irvine 20, Woodbridge 39--Jessica Corbin finished first for No. 5 Irvine (3-0) in 17:24. Teammate Erin Zehntner took second in 18:11. Mary Moore was the top finisher for Woodbridge (0-3), taking third place in 19:17.

Santa Margarita 23, Newport Harbor 32--Katie Nuanes won the three-mile race in 17:48 for No. 7 Santa Margarita (2-1).

In Sea View League girls’ volleyball:

Newport Harbor 3, Santa Margarita 0--Jeanette Hecker had six kills, 10 digs and 15 assists as No. 5 Newport Harbor (5-4, 4-0) swept No. 8 Santa Margarita (9-1, 3-1), 15-13, 15-9, 15-12.

In South Coast League volleyball:

Mater Dei 3, Capistrano Valley 2--Roberta Ghelke had 27 kills for No. 2 Mater Dei (7-1, 3-1). The Monarchs won 13-15, 15-6, 15-10, 11-15, 15-8. Ami Orr added 18 kills for Mater Dei.

In the Sunset League:

Edison 3, Marina 1--Kari Hogancamp had 11 kills for No. 10 Edison (7-3, 2-2), which won, 15-1, 15-7, 5-15, 15-3.

In Pacific Coast League water polo:

Laguna Beach 13, University 12 (OT)--Spencer Dornin gave the Artists (12-5, 1-1) a 12-11 lead in overtime and also scored the game-winner. Laguna Beach’s Justin Ostenson scored on a penalty shot with no time remaining to send the game into overtime.

In the South Coast League:

San Clemente 6, Capistrano Valley 4--The eighth-ranked Tritons (6-4, 2-0) trailed, 4-2, at halftime. San Clemente’s Jim Farley scored two of his three goals in the third quarter and goalie Shane Powell had six saves to help the defense shut out Capistrano Valley (5-10, 1-1) in the second half.
