SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

All week long, San Clemente Coach Mark McElroy stressed how important Friday’s game against Mission Viejo was to his team. He reminded his players that the Tritons had defeated Mission Viejo just once in the past 17 years.

Finally, McElroy had hoped that his team would just come out aggresively and attack the Diablos.

Mission accomplished.

Led by quarterback Chris Boden, San Clemente had what McElroy called “our best offensive performance this year,” as the Tritons rolled over Mission Viejo, 40-0, at San Clemente.

It was nearly a flawless first half for the Tritons, as they scored on every possession, held the Diablos (0-5, 0-1 in league) to just 44 yards in the first half and watched Boden have the best half of his career.

Boden, a senior, completed 13 of 15 passes for 215 yards and three touchdowns. He completed his first 13 passes; his first incompletion came with four seconds left in the first half.

San Clemente opened the scoring when Boden connected with San Kweskin on a 30-yard touchdown with 7:46 left in the first quarter.

After recovering an onside kick, the Triton (5-1, 1-0) marched down the field and scored when Ryan Davis ran one yard to cap a 10-play, 50-yard drive.

Boden and Kweskin teamed up on a pair of touchdown passes, the first 33 yards and the next covering six yards, and John Fowle added a 20-yard field goal to give San Clemente a 31-0 lead at halftime.

After a scoreless third quarter, San Clemente’s Chris Hayward ran one yard for a touchdown with 8:15 left to play.
