ORANGE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL / PREP EXTRA : Williams Does It All in Marina Victory Over Oilers

Share

Mike Williams doesn’t really do everything for Marina. It just seemed that way.

Williams rushed for 220 yards and two touchdowns and threw for another in the Vikings’ 26-8 Sunset League victory over Huntington Beach before 3,600 Friday night.

The 195-pound senior ran for only 64 yards in the first half, but came alive after the break. He busted a 43-yard run on the final play of the third quarter, setting up his six-yard scoring run on the next play to give the Vikings (3-4, 1-1) a 20-8 lead. On Marina’s next possession, Williams broke loose for an 87-yard touchdown run that put the game out of reach.

Williams not only broke the 1,000-yard mark for the season--he has rushed for 1,102 yards and 12 touchdowns in seven games--but also became the Vikings’ top passer for 1995. He connected with James Owens on an 83-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter.

Two second-quarter fumbles cost Huntington Beach (3-4, 0-2). Jason Locklin fumbled on first and goal at the Marina one-yard line, inches away from breaking a scoreless deadlock early in the period. After the Vikings had taken a 7-0 lead, Oiler Mershad Javan’s fumble inside his one-yard line was recovered by Marina safety Peter Mignosa in the end zone, giving the visitors a 14-0 lead with 1:17 left in the half.
