THE PREPS : FOOTBALL / OLYMPIC LEAGUE : Whittier Christian Drives to Victory

Karl Duffy capped an 84-yard scoring drive with a two-yard touchdown as Whittier Christian came from behind to defeat Brethren Christian, 21-14, in an Olympic League football game Saturday night at Whittier College.

Staying strictly on the ground in the second half, the Heralds effectively used their misdirection offense, with Duffy, a tight end, scoring the game-winner with 10:13 left to play. Whittier Christian’s scoring drive went 12 plays and Brian Algorri scored the two-point conversion.

Brethren Christian (4-3, 0-2) had an opportunity to tie the score on the ensuing drive, but a fumble, which was recovered by Chris Coppes on the 10, halted the drive with 7:46 remaining.

Whittier Christian (2-5, 1-1) did not allow Brethren Christian another chance as the Heralds ran out the clock. The final drive, which went 15 plays, was preserved on a successful fourth-and-one conversion at the Warrior 32 with 1:48 left to play. Aaron Tafoya gained two yards for the first down.

The Heralds finished the game with 355 yards in 57 carries, with Alex Petrie leading the attack with 183 yards in 28 carries.

The Heralds took a 7-0 lead when Adam Hite recovered a Petrie fumble in the end zone and the Warriors tied the score on Daniel Muilenburg’s 11-yard touchdown run.

Whittier Christian took a 13-7 lead with 38 seconds left in the first half when Petrie scored from the eight. The conversion attempt was wide.

Scott Milne scored from 28 yards and Mike Hauser connected on the conversion to give the Warriors a 14-13 edge before the Heralds’ time-consuming, winning drive.

David Priestley completed nine of 18 passes for 120 yards for the Warriors. Milne finished with 90 yards rushing and Muilenburg had 65.

For Whittier Christian, Algorri had 94 yards rushing, Tafoya contributed 41 and Duffy 37.

Quarterback Chris Vanderhook directed the attack without a rush attempt and threw only two passes, both incomplete.
