SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Sheila Vasan of Harvard-Westlake High had a couple of theories on the Wolverines’ 11-7 victory over Chaminade on Tuesday at Cal State Northridge that clinched the Mission League tennis title and avenged two losses to the Eagles last season.

“I think it was revenge,” said Vasan, who plays No. 1 doubles with Vicky Koven. “It was also because we wanted to wear the Mission League championship patches on our jackets.”

Whatever the reason, it worked.

The Wolverines (15-3, 13-0 in league play) won seven doubles sets.

Vasan and Koven swept, 6-4, 6-3 and 6-2, as did the No. 3 team of Lindsy Forbess and Amanda Countner, 6-3, 6-4, 6-3.

“Our strategy was just to go out and win as many games as possible just in case it came down to games,” Countner said.

The teams tied earlier this season and the Wolverines won on games, 73-70.

Teresa Galido (39-0) of Chaminade (13-4, 11-2) continued her tear through the league at No. 1 singles, winning, 6-3, 6-2, 6-1.

Leila Nasseri, at No. 1 singles for the Wolverines, rallied from a 5-0 deficit but lost to Galido, 6-3. She then posted 6-2 and 6-4 victories.

Jackie Gortman had 6-2 and 6-1 victories but lost to Galido, 6-1.
