PREP VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP : Sunny Hills Must Share Freeway Title After Losing to La Habra

Even though members of the Sunny Hills girls’ volleyball team received T-shirts that celebrated their fourth consecutive Freeway League championship, they couldn’t help shedding a few tears after La Habra defeated the Lancers, 15-11, 15-12, 11-15, 15-5, in a league match Thursday at La Habra.

Sunny Hills, which had beaten La Habra this season and was undefeated in league before Thursday, had hoped finally to win the league title outright instead of sharing it with La Habra as it has the last two years. But that was not to be as both teams finished 9-1 in league.

La Habra, 12-2 overall and ranked No. 8 in the Southern Section Division II, was led by Barbie Wiborg, who had 20 kills, and Jami Ediger, who had eight kills and six blocks.

The Highlanders easily took the first two games but seemed to get nervous in the third, when the Lancers broke out of an 11-11 tie and scored the last four points of the game sparked by two big kills by Shannon Rosenkranz.

In the fourth game, La Habra jumped out to a 12-4 lead before Sunny Hills scored five consecutive points to get back in the match. But Crystal Dominguez served two aces to give the Highlanders match point and Ediger won it with a kill.

Sunny Hills, 13-3 overall and ranked No. 10 in the Southern Section Division II, was led by Mandy Sherard, who had 12 kills.
