VENTURA — Ventura High put itself in playoff contention Friday night by winning its fourth consecutive game, a 24-21 Channel League victory over Dos Pueblos.
Jeramie Jackson led the Cougar attack with 132 yards in 14 carries, including a 63-yard run late in the fourth quarter that set up his own one-yard scoring run to put Ventura up, 24-14.
With the Cougars (5-4, 4-2 in league play) clinging to a 17-14 lead with 5 minutes 17 seconds left in the game, the Chargers (5-4, 4-2) were driving for a go-ahead touchdown. But Ventura linebacker Oscar Tovar made a big hit on running back J.J. Brunner to knock the ball loose at the Cougar one-yard line.
Kyle Schommer recovered, and two plays later, Jackson made his big run and scored with 1:39 remaining.
Anthony Ramos took the ensuing kickoff 66 yards to the Cougar 17, then tossed a 22-yard touchdown pass to Jason Stone to pull his team to within three points.
