Chatsworth Sweeps Kennedy in Take 3

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The third time wasn’t very charming for Kennedy High.

Chatsworth, however, enjoyed just about every minute of a 15-8, 15-8, 15-7 victory over Kennedy on Wednesday night in the City Section 4-A Division quarterfinals.

The Chancellors defeated the Golden Cougars (11-4) for the third time this season, showing little compassion for their Northwest Valley Conference rivals.

“We’ve got to do what we’ve got to do,” said Kim Pickup, who had 13 kills in her first match since breaking her nose last month. “We got pretty pumped up.”

Chatsworth must stay on an emotional plateau because up next in Wednesday’s semifinal is Palisades, which Chatsworth defeated in last year’s 4-A title match.

“All our heart won that match for us,” Pickup said of last year’s victory over the Dolphins. “Hopefully, we can do it again.”

The only downer for top-seeded Chatsworth (24-1) was the loss of middle blocker Nancy Vincent, playing in only her second match since tearing ligaments in her left knee before the season. She sprained her right ankle in the first game but is expected back in the semifinals.

“There may not be a hitter in the City that can get through her,” Chatsworth Coach Bud Dow said.

Jennifer Joseph, who had 23 kills, was particularly impressive in the third game with 10 kills.

“I just think we got overpowered,” Kennedy Coach Mike Stanton said. “They should be in the City finals.”

Kennedy had trouble hitting over Chatsworth’s taller defense, anchored by 6-foot Tynitra Wilson, with only Christine Thach (13 kills) hitting with consistency.
