ROUNDUP : Van Nuys Sweeps in Semifinal

Jasmeen Burton had 14 kills and Keri Otake added 17 assists as Van Nuys High defeated Franklin, 15-8, 15-7, 15-6, in a City Section 3-A Division volleyball semifinal Wednesday night at Van Nuys.

Janete Chun had 12 assists for the Wolves (12-3), who will play Poly in the final on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at Occidental College.

Downtown Business d. Valley Alternative, 7-15, 15-13, 6-15, 15-10, 15-13--The Cougars lost a 13-10 lead in the fifth game in the final match of the season, a match rescheduled from mid-October. Anjum Aslam had 12 kills to give her 77 this season, breaking the school record of 73 set by Lilibeth Cardano in 1993. Nancy Jacobo added 10 kills and Katie Hay had 11 aces.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Hamilton 6, Kennedy 1--The Golden Cougars (12-3) were swept in singles by top-seeded Hamilton (15-0) in the City Section 4-A semifinals at the Racquet Centre in Studio City.

Kennedy’s Debbie Tanudech and Anissa Bonneham beat Shuvonne Kerr and Jaspreet Kaur at No. 2 doubles, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2.

In other doubles matches, Hamilton’s Denise Shackleford and Jennifer Davis defeated Elisa Edelson and Puneet Kaur, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), and Ann Marie Fabian and Quanle Trang defeated Virginia Delcasal and Jenny Phan, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5).

Palisades 6, Granada Hills 1--The defending-champion Dolphins will return to the 4-A final after winning four of six matches in straight sets at the Racquet Centre. Christin Cho’s 6-4, 6-3 victory over Krissy Begley at No. 4 singles accounted for the only Highlander point.

Granada Hills (12-3) pushed Palisades (13-2) to three sets at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles, but Michelle Heiser and Suzanne Hanson at No. 1 and Anne Wu and Rebecca Tan at No. 2 came up short.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Royal 17, Dos Pueblos 13--The Highlander defense made the difference, stifling a fourth-quarter run to hold on to a Southern Section Division IV quarterfinal victory at UC Santa Barbara.

John Voegtli scored six goals and Chris Richeson added four to lead the top-seeded Highlanders (24-4).

The victory moves Royal into the semifinals against fourth-seeded Santa Barbara on Saturday at a site yet to be determined.

Righetti 10, Buena 9--Buena led Righetti, the No. 2 team in Division IV, by two goals late in the third quarter but wilted in the quarterfinal match at Buena. Righetti (22-4) outscored the Bulldogs in the fourth quarter, 3-1.

Jason Grubbs and Paul Caldentey each had three goals for Righetti.

John Engel had five goals and goalie Curtis Tolmie had 26 saves for Buena (15-12).

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Valley 98, East Los Angeles 71--Wil O’Neal scored 21 points, including five three-point baskets, and Wayne Simmons had 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Monarchs in a nonconference game at East L.A.

Benny Hoang had six steals and eight assists for Valley (2-1). The Huskies are 0-3.

Cuesta 78, Glendale 62--Ryan Sylva had 17 points and Ramon Jose and Marquet Davis each had 13 as the Vaqueros (0-1) lost a nonconference game to the Cougars (2-0) at Glendale.
