Dorsey Pulls Away From Banning

Dorsey High Coach Paul Knox feared the worst, but the Dons (11-1) played one of their best games Wednesday in a 28-7 victory over Wilmington Banning in a City Section 4-A Division playoff game at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

“I had nightmares all week,” Knox said. “This team scared me.”

Although the Pilots (6-6) have won 10 City 4-A titles and have steadily improved during this season, they were no match for the Dons’ trio of running backs and a stingy defense led by 6-foot-4 linebacker Na’il Diggs.

Raymont Skaggs rushed for 63 yards and scored two touchdowns. Dennis Northcutt had 61 yards, including a 20-yard score, and Antonio Chatman had 96 yards and a touchdown.

The teams combined for five fumbles. But James Lawrence’s fumble in the second quarter proved the most costly when Dorsey defensive back Dante Minners recovered at the Banning 26-yard line. Northcutt scored from 20 yards out on a sweep and the Dons held a 7-0 halftime lead.

Dorsey turned the game into a rout with Skaggs scoring on a 22-yard run and then catching a 35-yard pass from Marrell Hammick in the third quarter.
