SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The reconstruction of the Chatsworth High boys’ soccer team was in full progress.

Then came the Palmdale wrecking ball.

A goalie defeated a goalie on a decisive shot and Palmdale advanced past Chatsworth, 4-3, in penalty kicks after regulation play in the Hart tournament match ended with a 2-2 tie.

In a showdown between two area goal-scoring wizards, Chatsworth’s Mike Preis doubled a one-goal effort by Murad Dibbini.

But goalkeeper Jarrod Cline stole the offensive show Wednesday when he scored on Palmdale’s fifth and final penalty kick to send the Falcons (9-1-3) into a quarterfinal match today against Harvard-Westlake.

After stopping two of Chatsworth’s kicks during the shootout, Cline halted the Chancellors (2-5-1) with a low line drive that beat goaltender Guy Klein.

Cline scored in similar situation during the La Canada tournament earlier this month, drilling a penalty kick to help defeat Pasadena, but a position change to striker is not imminent.

“Not on this team,” said Cline, who had eight saves. “Maybe on another team, but not this one.”

The Chancellors could have used a secret weapon of their own.

Still reeling from an 0-3 showing at last week’s Royal tournament, they appeared ready to rebuild and took a 1-0 lead that lasted well into the second half.

But Dibbini set up a goal in the 60th minute and scored his 21st goal in the 74th minute to put Palmdale up, 2-1.

Chatsworth countered with a little more than two minutes to play, Preis decking a defender and beating Cline to tie the score at 2-2.

The Chancellors, however, failed to register a shot in 10 minutes of overtime and stalled during the shootout.

“It’s going to have to be only a step towards reconstruction,” said Coach Desmond Willows, who has not endured a losing record in his three seasons at Chatsworth. “We’re just going to have to keep working.”

Hard work by Dibbini, who was shadowed throughout by two different players, tied the match at 1-1.

Klein shanked a clearing kick and Dibbini fired a shot that was partially blocked. Brandon DeShields tapped in the deflection for Palmdale.

Dibbini did his own work on Palmdale’s second goal.

He took the ball at the top of the box, dribbled through a trio of defenders and beat Klein with a nicely placed shot.

“It was the first time I’d been able to do something,” Dibbini said. “They caught up to me, but I did a couple of moves and shot it in.”

Preis scored his 10th goal of the season to help send the match into overtime, but Palmdale knew what to do.

The Falcons won their third match this season on penalty kicks.

“Nothing new,” said Palmdale Coach Claudia Cline, who doubles as Jarrod’s mother. “I’m used to shootouts.”

And now, used to winning.
