Moorpark’s Taketa Named 2nd Team JC Soccer All-American

Forward Sean Taketa of the Moorpark College soccer team has been named to the Junior College All-American second team.

Midfielder Velasco Eliseo of Glendale College was named to the All-West region team along with Taketa, defender Ken Hickman and forward Pat Gutierrez of Moorpark.

Football

Kim Lawhorn, a former defensive lineman at UCLA, has been hired to coach the defensive line at Pierce College.

Boxing

The Palmdale Amateur Boxing Club is hosting an event on Jan. 21 at the Ramada Inn Hotel in Palmdale.

Ten bouts are scheduled, starting at 1:20 p.m.

Baseball

Mike Sims, a former catcher at Cal State Northridge, has been invited to spring training with the Florida Marlins.

Sims, who was drafted in 1993, has never played higher than Class A in the Marlins’ system.

Van Nuys High has named Mark Pomerantz as varsity baseball coach according to Jack Molina, the school’s athletic director.

Pomerantz, who is also the head football coach, replaces Jim Friery, who resigned last month.

Moorpark Little League will hold registration at Moorpark High for its upcoming season today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Toluca Pony Baseball will hold sign-ups for youngsters 5-14 at North Weddington Park today from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Mid Valley Pony baseball (ages 6 through 16) will hold registration for its spring season today and Jan. 20, 27 and 28 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at its complex at Louise Avenue and Oxnard Street in Encino.

Tryouts will be held during registration hours.

Basketball

Gerald Rhoden, the second-leading scorer for Cal State Northridge, will travel with the team to Oklahoma this weekend.

Rhoden suffered a sprained ankle in practice on Thursday and was questionable for the road trip, which includes games at Oral Roberts and Oklahoma State.
