SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

San Clemente fans flaunted their football team’s victory over Mater Dei with a huge banner when the Tritons hosted No. 1 Mater Dei in a South Coast League boys’ basketball game Friday night.

But on a different night, in another sport, the Monarchs crushed San Clemente, 83-27, in a game that wasn’t even that close.

“It was totally humiliating,” San Clemente Coach Ed Coyle said. “We got a quick lead and the crowd got behind us and we just go caught up in that. We shot the ball too quick and had too many turnovers.”

Mater Dei’s full-court press forced the Tritons into 29 turnovers and they shot only 17% (eight of 46) from the floor. San Clemente scored only three points in the second quarter and none in the third.

The Monarchs shot 51% from the field and outrebounded San Clemente, 41-35.

Mike Vukovich led the Monarchs (20-1, 3-0) with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Teammate Troy Harrell scored 14 points, including three three-pointers, and Kevin Augustine scored 11 points and added four assist and four steals. Reserve Anthony Vallas played five minutes and hit four of four from the field for 10 points and added five rebounds.

“We wanted to come out and slow the game down, but they wouldn’t let us. I expected everything we got tonight,” Coyle said.

Kameel Flowers led San Clemente (11-8, 1-2) with six points.
