Century Has to Rally to Beat Katella

Century rallied from 14 points down in the fourth quarter to force overtime and defeated Katella, 71-64, in an Empire League boys’ basketball game Friday at Katella.

Roman Cortez made a three-pointer to send the game into overtime, when Century (16-8, 6-2) scored all its points from the free-throw line, converting 11 of 15.

Hector Beltran led the Centurions with 23 points, Terrail Zoller had 17, 15 in the second half, and 14 rebounds and Chris Lopez had 17 points.

Jacy Armbruster scored 29 points for Katella (16-6, 4-4).

In other Empire League games:

Cypress 48, Loara 41--Chad Boberg scored 19 points and Wes Bunn had 16 for Cypress.

El Dorado 60, Kennedy 43--Ryan Ayer scored 17 points and Mike Gartner had 12 points and nine rebounds for visiting El Dorado (13-11, 4-4). Kevin Reese had 16 points and seven rebounds for Kennedy (7-17, 3-5).

In the Academy League:

Fairmont 38, Liberty Christian 32--Aman Bhasin scored 17 points for host Fairmont (5-13, 1-7).

Orangewood Academy 92, St. Michael’s Prep 50--Brent Slagle made five three-pointers and finished with 23 points for Orangewood Academy (10-8, 6-2). Freshman Patrick Rainey had a career-high 16 points and 13 rebounds (nine on offense).

In the Express League:

Heritage Christian 73, Norwalk Pioneer Baptist 27--Jim Findlater scored 22 points and Jared Zielinski had 15 for Heritage Christian (14-8, 9-3).

In the Century League:

Santa Ana Valley 82, Orange 61--Olujimi Mann had 31 points, including four three-pointers, and 10 assists for host Santa Ana Valley (14-9, 7-1), which made 11 three-pointers. Ike Harmon had 16 points and seven rebounds for the Falcons. Juan Dotson scored 18 points for Orange (10-11, 3-5).

Villa Park 58, Foothill 44--Eric Chenowith scored 27 points and had 11 rebounds to lead Villa Park (18-4, 7-1).

In the Freeway League:

Sonora 66, Buena Park 51--Josh Lien had 25 points and 11 rebounds as Sonora clinched a tie for the league title. Jeffrey Berokoff and Jimmy Landry each scored 12 points for the Raiders (18-5, 8-0).

Sunny Hills 73, Fullerton 61--Sean Granillo had 16 points and 10 rebounds for host Sunny Hills (9-15, 2-6), which made 30 of 40 free throws. Seth La Tour scored 17 points for Fullerton (12-12, 4-4).

Troy 79, La Habra 67--Jerry Inzunza scored 17 points and Jon Torres had 15 for second-place Troy (15-9, 6-2).

In the Olympic League:

Calvary Chapel 65, Brethren Christian 61--Kevin Falconer scored 23 points for Calvary Chapel (19-4, 8-0), which made 14 of 18 free throws in the fourth quarter to seal the victory. Jacob Brown scored 13 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter for host Brethren Christian (6-13, 3-5).

Orange Lutheran 60, Whittier Christian 48--Jason Kemner scored 14 points and Brian Sappington had 11 points, 11 rebounds and six blocked shots for host Orange Lutheran (10-11, 6-2).

In the Orange League:

Brea Olinda 70, Valencia 55--Guard Sean Wink had 29 points and Eric Repp had 15 for sixth-ranked Brea Olinda (22-2, 8-0).

Magnolia 50, Anaheim 30--Mister McKinney scored 18 points for visiting Magnolia (12-12, 5-3), which outscored Magnolia, 26-10, in the second half and clinched a playoff berth.

Western 43, Savanna 41--Vince Branstetter made five of his six free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter to help Western (8-16, 3-5) win. Only three Savanna players scored, with Brandon Warden accounting for 20 of the Rebels’ points.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Estancia 51, Costa Mesa 48--Estancia’s Dane Plock hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to win the game at Costa Mesa. Plock led the Eagles (20-4, 7-1) with 23 points and Chris Candlish had 17. Josh Weeks scored 19 and Mike Montoya had 14 for the Mustangs.

Laguna Hills 90, University 74--Matt Houser scored 15 of his 34 points in the third quarter when Laguna Hills (15-8, 5-3) outscored University, 34-22. Mike Scaglione had 22 points for Laguna Hills.

Ryan Schachter had 23 points and five three-pointers and Mahdi Aslampour had 19 points, including five three-pointers, for University (9-14, 2-6).

In the Sea View League:

Corona del Mar 45, Newport Harbor 30--Corona del Mar outscored Newport Harbor, 19-2, in the third quarter. Brian Coleman scored 16 points for the Sea Kings (13-10, 4-4).

Santa Margarita 49, El Toro 42--Eighth-ranked Santa Margarita outscored El Toro, 17-6, in the fourth quarter to avoid a second upset by the Chargers. Allen Krist scored 19 points and Dennis Keane had 16 for the Eagles (16-6, 6-2).

Woodbridge 60, Irvine 51--Chris Burgess scored 32 points to lead third-ranked Woodbridge (18-5, 7-1). William Stovall scored 12 points for the Warriors.

Amir Rahimi scored 20 points for Irvine (10-14, 4-4).

In the Sunset League:

Esperanza 81, Marina 62--Lohnnie Tape scored 19 points and Josh Greer 14 for fourth-ranked Esperanza (21-3, 7-1).

Los Alamitos 51, Fountain Valley 49--Cory Johnson made a layup with two seconds remaining to lift No. 5 Los Alamitos (17-6, 6-2). Nathan Strange had 14 points for host Fountain Valley (10-13, 3-5).
