Scoreboard Doesn’t Lie as Canoga Park Fails Polygraph, 86-80

Canoga Park High played itself into a tie for first place in the Mid-Valley League and out of the No. 1 playoff seeding for the City Section 3-A playoffs with an 86-80 Valley Pac-8 Conference setback to Poly Wednesday at Canoga Park.

Canoga Park, ranked second in The Times’ area poll, lost at home for only the third time in two seasons.

Eric Owens scored 27 points for the Parrots (6-17, 2-7), including 18 in the second half. Johnny Lopez added 17 points.

Poly didn’t win in conference play until beating Sylmar last Friday.

Carloes Harper had 21 points and Aaron Lasley added 19 for Canoga Park (18-4, 7-2), which figured to get the No. 1 seeding in the City 3-A playoffs before Wednesday’s loss.

Cleveland 65, Kennedy 64--Junior Brignac completed a four-point play in the final seconds of overtime and the Cavaliers (14-8, 8-1) edged the Golden Cougars (10-11, 2-7)) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Kennedy.

Brignac, who scored all 10 of Cleveland’s points in overtime, made a three-point shot and was fouled with four seconds to play. He sank the ensuing free throw and finished with 28 points, 10 rebounds and eight steals.

Waking Bailey scored 18 points for Kennedy.

Van Nuys 74, Sylmar 51--Onaje Longmire scored 23 points and Kris Hurdle added 15 as the Wolves (12-9, 7-2) won a Valley Pac-8 game at Van Nuys.

San Fernando 70, Granada Hills 66--Marty Trinidad had 32 points for the Tigers (6-18, 2-7) in a Northwest Valley Conference game.

El Camino Real 51, Birmingham 41--Cameron Henderson had 20 points and 12 rebounds, and Eric Dotson added 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Conquistadores (15-9, 5-4) in a Northwest Valley Conference game.

Chatsworth 73, Taft 63--Jerome Joseph had 31 points and six assists for the Chancellors (10-9, 7-2) in a Northwest Valley Conference game.

Verdugo Hills 67, Hollywood 64--Charlie Coronado scored all 10 of the Dons’ overtime points--including the decisive layup and free throw with five seconds remaining--in a North Valley Conference game.

Coronado had 26 points and nine rebounds and Andrew Reagan added 16 points and 20 rebounds for the Dons (9-15, 4-9).

Verdugo Hills was without Maurice Potter and his 33.6-point average for the second time in three games for undisclosed reasons.

Harvard-Westlake 78, Chaminade 51--Jason Collins had 19 points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots, and Jarron Collins had 24 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and five steals in a Mission League game for the Wolverines (22-2, 12-0), ranked No. 1 in The Times’ area poll.

Bell-Jeff 53, La Salle 48--The Guards (18-5, 10-1) won their ninth consecutive game and clinched at least a share of the Santa Fe League title behind 15 points by Ruben Douglas and 14 by Kent Dennis at Bell-Jeff.

Camarillo 58, Royal 51--Josh Hill scored 18 points and had 10 rebounds for the Scorpions (14-8, 6-7) in a Marmonte League game at Camarillo.

GIRLS

Grant 49, Reseda 32--Nakeisha Perkins had 14 points and 17 rebounds as the Lancers (13-5, 7-2) clinched their second consecutive East Valley League title with the Valley Pac-8 Conference victory.

North Hollywood 65, Monroe 42--Samantha Fargeon had 10 points and 16 rebounds as the Huskies (17-3, 9-0) clinched the Mid-Valley League title.

Hart 52, Burbank 26--Candace Boller had 18 points and 12 rebounds as the Indians (18-7, 9-0) clinched a fourth consecutive Foothill League title at Valencia High.
