Aylsworth Helps Westlake Wrap Up a Tie for Marmonte Title

Steve Aylsworth scored 12 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter to help Westlake High to a 76-66 victory over Agoura on Friday night that earned the Warriors a tie for the Marmonte League boys’ basketball championship.

Jeremiah Nesbitt had 18 points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots and Jason Gaines added 18 points for the Warriors (15-8, 9-5) in league play, who tied Royal for first place.

The Highlanders had a one-game lead entering play Friday, but lost, 70-57, to Simi Valley.

Agoura (14-9, 8-6) was without Joel Weiss--its leading rebounder and second-leading scorer--for the second consecutive game. Weiss was not allowed to play because he broke a team rule off campus.

John Barry, who took Weiss’ spot in the starting lineup, had 18 points for the Chargers, and Brian Laibow added 16.

Palmdale 65, Quartz Hill 48--Steve Eernisse had 18 points and seven rebounds and Markus Carr added 14 points, seven assists and three steals for the Falcons in a Golden League game at Quartz Hill.

The Falcons (17-9, 7-3) wound up in a tie for second place with Antelope Valley, but they enter next week’s Southern Section Division I-AA playoffs as the Golden League’s third-seeded team based on tiebreaker procedures.

Santa Clara 71, Santa Paula 43--Jeff Lacefield scored 26 points, Adam Lopez added 20 and Lukman Dotson contributed 14 points and 10 assists as the Saints (20-4, 10-0) wrapped up the Frontier League season.

Canyon 96, Valencia 46--Ruben Castaneda scored 27 points as the Cowboys (16-10, 6-4) clinched second place in the Foothill league at Valencia.

Kevin Woods had 13 points for Valencia.

Burbank 78, Burroughs 68--Greg Church came off the bench to score 14 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter for the Bulldogs in a Foothill League game, negating a 30-point performance by J.K. Scott of Burroughs (13-11, 4-6).

Matt Baker scored 16 points for Burbank (14-10, 7-3), Don Allado had 13 points and four blocked shots, and Juni Williams added 12 points.

Bell-Jeff 70, Cathedral 65--Ruben Douglas scored 13 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter as the Guards (19-5, 11-1) broke open a one-point game in the final two minutes and clinched the Santa Fe League title.

Freshman Kent Dennis added 17 points for the guards.

Hoover 71, Glendale 64--Hamlet Azarian had 15 points while Eric Jenkins and Arbi Baghdasarian each scored 12 as the Tornadoes (15-9, 8-2) won their first Pacific League championship since 1984.

Steve Avetyan scored 21 points for Glendale (7-18, 1-9).

Crescenta Valley 64, Arcadia 55--Nathan Sinning had 21 points and 12 rebounds for the Falcons (18-7, 6-4) in a Pacific League game at Crescenta Valley.

Jake Willis added 14 points and 15 assists, and Mike Greco had 19 points and 12 rebounds for Crescenta Valley.

Ventura 76, Buena 70--Ceneka Shaw’s 34 points were not enough as the Bulldogs (15-9, 10-4) lost their Channel League finale in overtime at Buena.

Donte Lincoln had 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Cougars (14-9, 9-5), Charles Dixon added 17 points and 12 rebounds, and Tim Heuer also finished with 17, including the go-ahead layup in overtime.

John Tobias scored 17 for Buena.

Channel Islands 66, Camarillo 46--Charles Merricks collected 25 points and nine rebounds, and O.J. Thomas added 12 points and seven assists for the Raiders (15-8, 7-7) in a Marmonte League game at Camarillo.

Josh Hill scored 11 points for the Scorpions (14-9, 6-8).

Van Nuys 84, Poly 67--Onaje Longmire scored 20 points and Jon Okui added 17 points and six steals to help the Wolves clinch the Mid-Valley League title.

The Wolves (13-9) tied Canoga Park for first place in the Valley Pac-8 Conference with an 8-2 record, but Van Nuys was 5-1 in Mid-Valley League play and Canoga Park finished 4-2.

Canoga Park 86, Sylmar 62--Carloes Harper Jr. had 25 points and 11 rebounds, and Anthony Ellison added 20 points, 15 rebounds and six assists for the Hunters (19-4, 8-2) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Sylmar.

Darron Wilson and Jeremiah Turner each scored 20 points for Sylmar.

El Camino Real 62, San Fernando 36--Cameron Henderson had 25 points, nine rebounds and six steals as the Conquistadores (16-9, 6-4) won a Northwest Valley Conference game at El Camino Real.

Rod Crow added 12 points for El Camino Real.

Kennedy 60, Taft 43--Michael Calloway scored 24 points for the Golden Cougars in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Taft.

Danny Modaberpour scored 10 points and had seven assists for Taft (6-14, 2-8).

Birmingham 59, Granada Hills 42--Eric Velazquez had 13 points and Fahim Hassenkhail added 12 for the Braves (11-11, 5-5) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Birmingham.

Paul Chan scored 13 points for the Highlanders (6-4).

Reseda 46, Grant 45--Tyrone Pearson made a 17-foot jump shot at the final buzzer to keep the Regents’ playoff hopes alive in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Reseda.

Donald Patterson had a chance to put the Lancers up by three with three seconds remaining, but he missed the second of two free throws.

Shawn Blackman added 12 points and Jamaal Washington chipped in 11 for the Regents (9-14, 5-5).

Patterson finished with 17 points for Grant.
