After a wacky final week of regular season for several Orange County girls’ soccer leagues, the Southern Section playoff pairings held some surprises when they were announced Monday.

Santa Margarita, top ranked in the Southern Section Division I poll all season, tied 10th-ranked Irvine last Tuesday and lost to unranked Newport Harbor Thursday and was not seeded among the top four teams of the Division I playoffs, which begin Wednesday with wild-card games.

Santa Margarita (22-1-3, 7-1-2 in the Sea View League) finished tied for the league championship with Irvine (13-4-7, 6-0-4). The Eagles lost a coin flip with the Vaqueros to determine the league’s No. 1 entry, and will host Don Lugo (17-4-5) at 3 p.m. Saturday in the first round.

After that, Santa Margarita could face Sunset League champion Los Alamitos (13-5-4), seeded third, in the quarterfinals and South Coast League champion Mater Dei (16-3-2), seeded second, in the semifinals.

Three-time defending champion Marina (12-8-2) dropped to fifth-place in Sunset League after untimely losses to Edison (15-6-5) and Los Alamitos and is not in the playoffs.
