Glendale Thrown for a Loss to Harvard

Wednesday’s CIF Southern Section Division III wild-card match at Glendale High lived up to its name, as all three goals were scored during a nine-minute span in the second half of Harvard-Westlake’s 2-1 victory.

A Glendale player was thrown out during the final minutes for allegedly hitting a Harvard player with a thrown ball.

Soccer player--A player who scored a goal for the Simi Valley boys’ team in a playoff game was misidentified in a Feb. 15 story. Ryan Meuse scored for Simi Valley in a loss to Trabuco Hills.

Senior midfielder Greg Nortman scored in the 21st minute for the Wolverines (13-7-3), and senior stopper Brenton Greer scored the winner on a header four minutes later--his first high school goal.

Jefferson Pinzon answered for the Dynamiters (14-5-4) in the 29th minute, but Glendale’s fate was sealed when Alfred Megrabyan was red-carded with five minutes remaining for the ball-throwing incident.

According to Wolverine Coach Mark Devey, two Glendale players received yellow cards and play was stopped twice for rough-play warnings prior to the ball-throwing incident.

Harvard plays at third-seeded Arroyo Grande in a first-round match Friday.

Trabuco Hills 2, Simi Valley 1--After the teams played 40 minutes of scoreless overtime, the host Mustangs (8-6-7) won on a penalty-kick shootout, 4-2, in a Division I wild-card match.

James Tutino scored late in the second half of regulation for the Pioneers (19-4-4) to force overtime.

Highland 4, Sultana 1--Four players scored second-half goals for the Bulldogs (11-7-7) in a Division III wild-card playoff match at Highland.

Derek Brown opened the scoring with a penalty kick and Esteban Alvarez finished it by bending a corner kick around the goal post. Shawn Borak and J.J Sides scored in between.

The Bulldogs, who have won 11 of 16 matches, will play at No. 1-seeded Alta Loma on Friday.

Kilpatrick 5, St. Monica 2--The Mustangs defeated the Mariners in a Division V wild-card match, and will face No. 3-seeded La Salle on Saturday.

GIRLS

Upland 4, Westlake 1--The Warriors scored first on Megan Daly’s goal in the 20th minute but they couldn’t hold on in a Division I wild-card match.

Erica Ehrlich had five saves for Westlake (13-9).

Monrovia 4, Alemany 2--Tiffany Thompson scored in each half, but it was not enough for the Indians (13-17) in a Division II wild-card match at Alemany.

Thompson’s second goal narrowed Monrovia’s lead to 3-2 midway through the second half, but the Wildcats added a goal to put the match out of reach.

Chadwick 2, Saugus 0--The Centurions lost in overtime of a Division III wild-card match at Chadwick.

Walnut 3, Palmdale 0--The visiting Falcons were eliminated in a Division III wild-card match.

Moorpark 3, Villanova Prep 1--Michelle Glass, Kaila Trejos and Jenny Cooney scored for the visiting Musketeers (6-12-3) in a Division IV wild-card match.

Glass’ goal tied the match in the 16th minute, and Trejos and Cooney scored in overtime.
