Schea Cotton made a successful return to the Bellflower St. John Bosco boys’ basketball team last Friday. The junior forward, who had been out of the lineup since Dec. 26 because of hand and shoulder injuries, scored 24 points in a 63-61 victory over Bishop Montgomery. The victory helped St. John Bosco finish third in the Del Rey League and clinch a berth in the Southern Section Division I-AA playoffs, which begin Friday. . . . Officials of the San Gabriel Valley League and Southern Section are reviewing a boys’ basketball game between Compton Dominguez and Downey last Thursday that ended in the third quarter after a fight erupted. Dominguez was ahead, 50-32, when Jason Thomas of Dominguez and Josh Fisher of Downey got into a scuffle. An unidentified fan came out of the bleachers and knocked over Greg Stapp, Downey’s vice principal. A videotape of the incident is being used in the review. Dominguez was awarded the victory. . . . Bell running back Vern Benard is the first player from the school to receive a Division I scholarship since 1978. Bell, 5 feet 11 and 170 pounds, signed a letter of intent with Idaho. . . . Sylmar running back Durell Price, the two-time City Section Division 4-A player of the year, had a change of heart and signed with UCLA last week after sending the wrong letter-of-intent form to Ohio State. . . . Los Alamitos football Coach John Barnes will coach a California all-star team that will play an all-star team from Texas in the Shrine game on July 20 at Cal State Fullerton. . . . The Dorsey boys’ basketball team forfeited two victories over Carson and one each against Narbonne and Banning last week for using an ineligible player, junior Derrick Robinson, a transfer from Baldwin Park.
