Westminster Comes Back to Defeat Saugus
Brandon Fox’s basket with four seconds left clinched a 65-62 victory for Westminster over Saugus in the first round of the Southern Section Division I-A boys’ basketball playoffs Friday.
The Lions led by one when Fox caught a length-of-the-court pass for a layup. Fox finished with 23 points.
Saugus led, 31-29, at halftime. Scott Yoshizaki scored 13 of his 19 points in the second half for the Westminster (12-14), which plays Moreno Valley Canyon Springs in Tuesday’s second round.
In other games:
Capistrano Valley 67, Aliso Niguel 48--Dan Galvanoni scored 24 points and Randy Shepard 16 for the Cougars (16-12), who broke the game open with a 16-4 second quarter. Capistrano advances to play Ventura Buena.
El Toro 59, Century 56--Sophomore Mark Wulfemeyer scored 18 points, including three three-pointers, for El Toro (15-12). Hector Beltran led Century (16-10) with 20 points. El Toro next plays Newhall Hart.
Mater Dei 70, Santa Ana 40--Mike Vukovich and Tom Lippold each scored 20 points for top-seeded Mater Dei (28-1), which jumped out to a 21-2 first-quarter lead. Brad Williams added eight points and nine rebounds for the Monarchs, who next face San Bernardino Cajon.
Riverside Poly 69, Edison 57--Brian Slusser scored 23 points for Edison (14-12).
