Capistrano Valley Beats Edison

Capistrano Valley learned its lesson against Edison early in the season, when it defeated the Chargers in a game Edison dominated.

Cougar Coach Hamid Sedehi said Capistrano Valley was lucky to win that one.

On Saturday, in the first round of the Division I girls’ soccer playoffs, Capistrano Valley didn’t need any luck in winning, 1-0. The Cougars (17-4-3) used their defense to hold off Edison, which lost to the Cougars by the same score in the first meeting.

Freshman forward Chandra King scored the winning goal for Capistrano Valley, five minutes into the game. King took a Liz Delgado pass at the corner of the penalty box and drove to the front of the net, drilling the ball over the outstretched hands of goalkeeper Jocelyn Polen.

“With Liz and Chandra up front you are always hoping for goals,” Sedehi said. “They create a lot of chances for our midfielders.”

King has nine goals this season and Delgado has eight, along with 16 assists.

“We have deadly people up front, but our defense is what holds it all together,” Sehedi said. “With our defense, if we score a goal, I think it can hold. We have a tremendous defensive line.”

Led by senior Shannon Kinney, who moved from forward to fullback, the Cougars were able to keep all of Edison’s advances away from the net, resulting in only one save for goalkeeper Shawna Draper.

Edison had two open opportunities to tie the score but couldn’t take advantage. Loree Tamanaha had a wide-open shot in front of the net, midway through the first half and sent it sailing over the goal. Draper gave Edison another chance when she fell down trying to retrieve the ball and the Chargers again missed the net.
