Mater Dei (26-3) at San Diego Rancho Bernardo (25-5), 7:30 p.m.

After beating Clovis West, 60-50, on Tuesday, things have worked out pretty well for Mater Dei. The Monarchs are still on the road, but against Rancho Bernardo, which has traditionally struggled against Orange County teams--and lost to Huntington Beach in the third game of the season. The Broncos typically play 32 minutes of pressure defense, which was responsible for their upset of second-seeded Palos Verdes Peninsula, 64-55. That’s not bad for a team that shouldn’t be here. In its 48-46 victory over Vista in the San Diego Section championship, Rancho Bernardo shot 17 for 24 from the free-throw line, Vista three for 21. Rhonda Gondringer is averaging 16.6 points in the playoffs, and Melody Peterson 15.8, but Mater Dei is getting a lift from Lori Hurlbut (11.2), who averaged less than seven points during the regular season.
