Tonight’s Southern California Regional : Prep Basketball Semifinal Games
GIRLS’ DIVISION II
Santee Santana (30-2) at Woodbridge (29-2), 7:30 p.m.
Santana lost to second-seeded San Diego Scripps Ranch in Friday’s San Diego Section II-A championship game, and Scripps Ranch is already out of the regionals. But that means nothing if junior Kelly Simers gets hot. Simers (19.0 points), an excellent perimeter shooter, is crucial to the Sultans’ upset hopes. Against Scripps Ranch, she got only two three-point shots (and made one). Santana’s best player is San Diego State-bound Sophia Sledge (15.0 points), who scored 43 against Vista in December. But the way Woodbridge is playing, the Warriors might not care. Erin Stovall’s averaging 21.6 points in the playoffs, and Melanie Pearson’s averaging 15.
Ocean View (23-8) at Brea Olinda (28-3), 7:30 p.m.
They had a week to prepare for each other when they met Saturday for the Southern Section Division II-A title, and Brea won, 54-44. Three notable things have happened since. Brea’s leading scorer, Jennifer Saari, is out for the rest of the playoffs after re-injuring her knee Saturday in the second quarter against the Seahawks. Brea is beginning to feel comfortable without her. Ocean View has since knocked off one of the state’s last unbeaten teams, San Diego Scripps Ranch, 60-45, in the first round Tuesday. Without Saari, Brea outscored Ocean View, 34-32, in the game’s final 19 1/2 minutes. If Becky Fraser (16 points against Brea), who took only one shot in the first half, asserts herself the way she did in the second half of Saturday’s game, the Seahawks have a chance.
