1996 BOYS’ SWIMMING AND DIVING PREVIEW : SIX TEAMS TO WATCH : MISSION VIEJO

Share

Coach: Mike Pelton (21st year).

1995: 8-0, 5-0 in the South Coast League. Won its 17th Division I championship.

Key returners: James Crowson, Jr.; James Davidson, So.; Agustin Guzman, Sr.; Brandon Hiji, Sr.; Karl Hyross, Sr., Bart Kizierowski, Sr.; Goh Phuangthong, Sr.

Key newcomers: Bo Luddy, Fr.; Evan Ray, Fr.; Juan Rodela, So.; Fausto Trivino, Sr.; Sean Wilson, Fr.

Outlook: It must be nice to lose top seniors and be able to plug in the gaps with swimmers just as talented. That’s the case for Mission Viejo, which should again dominate its competition, including the Southern Section Division I finals. Though Pelton said the boys’ team is weak in diving and the breaststroke, he still expects seniors Hyross, Guzman, Phuangthong and Kizierowski to keep the Diablos ahead in the individual events. Although Kizierowski might miss some meets because of his Olympic training--he will be representing Poland in the Olympics this summer in Atlanta--his absence will not the Diablos too much.
