SIX TEAMS TO WATCH : EL TORO

Share

Coach: Sheri Ross (21st year).

1995: 12-2, 4-1 in the Sea View League; beat Irvine in the final event to win at league finals.

Key returners: Summer Case, Jr.; Katie Lowes, Sr.; Katie Simmons, Sr.; Keri Wilson, Sr.

Key newcomers: Ashley Pyka, Fr.; Lara Reaves, Fr.

Outlook: Although the El Toro boys’ team was hurt by graduation, the girls’ team still has enough swimmers returning to make the Chargers one of the county’s top teams. Seniors Lowes and Simmons are back, and the defending Sea View League champions have some freshmen who will fill in the gaps. Lowes, who will be attending California on an athletic scholarship this fall, will no doubt give Irvine’s Wendy O’Brien one more year of head-to-head competition in the 50- and 100-yard freestyles. Lowes, who has never defeated O’Brien in either race in her high school career, would love nothing more than to beat her league rival in this, their final go-round.As for the freshmen, keep an eye on Reaves, who will give the Chargers some good times in the butterfly.
