Birmingham Extends Track Winning Streak

Seniors Maurice Threewitts and Lavon Rockett and junior Mohammed Ahmed each won two events to lead the Birmingham High boys’ track and field team to its 65th consecutive dual meet victory with a 95-27 triumph Friday over visiting Granada Hills in a Northwest Valley Conference opener.

Threewitts ran personal bests of 22.4 seconds in the 200 meters and 51.6 in the 400 for the Braves (1-0).

Rockett set a personal best of 22 feet 9 inches in the long jump and won the triple jump at 40-8.

Mohammed, the 1995 City Section champion in the frosh-soph 110 high hurdles, ran 15.9 in that event and clocked a personal best of 41.5 in the 300 intermediate hurdles.

El Camino Real 117, San Fernando 9--Senior Roderick Crow won four events and ran legs on both victorious relay teams as the host Conquistadores romped in a Northwest Valley Conference opener.

Crow ran 22.4 in the 220-yard dash and 52.4 in the 440, and leaped 21-1 in the long jump and 42-0 1/2 in the triple jump. He also ran the second leg on the Conquistadores’ 440- and mile-relay teams that timed 45.0 and 3:48.0.

Athletes were allowed to compete in more than four events because it was the first meet of the season for both teams.

SOFTBALL

Hart 3, Calabasas 1--Danni Socha hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning for the Indians (3-2) in a nonleague game at Hart. Mary Colleran pitched six hitless innings, striking out six for Hart.

Montclair Prep 4, Venice 3--Angela Rotstein scored the winning run for the Mounties (3-1) on a two-out single by Michelle Kass in a Westside tournament consolation game.

Agoura 4, Louisville 3--Melissa Fetman singled home Stacy Williams, who had two doubles and two runs batted in, in the sixth for the Chargers (2-0) in a nonleague game at Louisville.

Jennifer Grennan (2-0) allowed four hits with five strikeouts and two walks.

BASEBALL

Chaminade 5, Quartz Hill 1--Jason Giovannettone stole five bases and scored three times for the Eagles (2-1) in a nonleague game. Keith Mate had a solo homer, and Chris Gray (1-1) struck out two, walked one and gave up six hits for the Eagles.
