Woodbridge Pulls Off Track Upset

Unranked Woodbridge, led by Will Stovall, Casey Robles and David Allen, defeated second-ranked Santa Margarita, 76-50, in a Sea View League track and field meet Thursday at Woodbridge.

Stovall narrowly defeated Tim Fitzgerald, one of the county’s top sprinters, in the 200 meters. Stovall and Fitzgerald were each timed at 22.1 seconds.

In the 1,600, Robles narrowly defeated Michael Murray, The Times’ cross-country runner of the year. Both finished at 4 minutes 30.3 seconds.

David Allen broke his school record in the pole vault, easily winning in 14 feet 1.

Woodbridge is 5-0, 2-0. Santa Margarita is 1-1 in league.

In Garden Grove League boys’ track:

Garden Grove 104, La Quinta 23--Kevin Griswold, the county’s leading sprinter, won the 100 meters (10.6) and anchored the winning 400-meter relay team for Garden Grove.

In the Freeway League:

Troy 73, Sunny Hills 54--Willie Piguee won the shot put (51-8) for Troy.

In the Orange League:

Brea Olinda 98, Western 37--Cameron St. Clair won the pole vault (13-6) and Jim Norum won the shot put (45-10 1/2) and discus (151-5) for Brea (8-2, 2-0).

In the South Coast League:

Dana Hills 87, Mission Viejo 48--Steve Anstead won the 100 (10.8), 200 (22.9), long jump (21-11 3/4) and triple jump (42-11) for host Dana Hills (4-0, 2-0).

In the Sunset League:

Huntington Beach 68, Marina 64--Jess Strutzel ran the anchor leg on the winning 1,600-meter relay team that decided the outcome of the meet. Strutzel had also won the 200, 400, and 800.

In Garden Grove League girls’ track:

Garden Grove 108, La Quinta 18--Claudia Fatoalia won the discus (106-7) and the shot (32-8) for host Garden Grove.

Rancho Alamitos 92, Los Amigos 31--Junior Natasha Drayden won the 100 yards, 220, and long jump and ran on the winning 440 relay team for Rancho Alamitos.

In the Freeway League:

Troy 65, Sunny Hills 62--Erin Sauchelli set a school record in the 200 (26.3) and Joanna Evans, Megan Bagdonas, Sunny Nicholas and Misty Weed set a school record in the 1,600 relay (4:17.9).

In the Sea View League:

Woodbridge 86, Santa Margarita 50--Erin Stovall ran a county-leading 12.1 seconds in the 100 meters for the Warriors.

In Century League boys’ volleyball:

Foothill 3, El Modena 0--Stuart Lambourne had 11 kills for Foothill (6-1, 3-0), which won, 15-3, 15-6, 15-5. The Knights are ranked fourth in Division II.

In Empire League baseball:

Cypress 10, Katella 7--J.R. Johnson drove in five runs as Cypress upset fifth-ranked Katella (8-4, 4-1) at Boysen Park. Johnson was three for four and Bobby Brito two for four for Cypress (9-3, 5-1), which scored four runs in the first and six in the fourth.

El Dorado 4, Loara 2--Mike Castillo hit a three-run home run in the seventh for visiting El Dorado (8-5, 4-2).

Kennedy 6, Century 3--Kennedy rallied from a 3-0 deficit, scoring six runs in the bottom of the sixth. Jack Tucker tied the score, 3-3, with a two-run homer and Tom Haas singled in the go ahead run for Kennedy (7-5, 2-3).

In the Century League:

Canyon 11, Foothill 7--Brandon Smith hit a grand slam and Jeff Leuenberger had three hits and three RBIs for sixth-ranked Canyon (10-1, 5-0). Foothill dropped to 9-2, 4-1.

In the Garden Grove League:

La Quinta 8, Rancho Alamitos 1--Joe Garcia had two hits and three RBIs for La Quinta (10-3, 2-0), the second-ranked team in Division III.

In Garden Grove League golf:

Rancho Alamitos 201, La Quinta 231--Evan Rothman shot one-over-par 36 at Willowick, as Rancho Alamitos (6-5, 3-0) posted its best team score in the three-year history of the golf program.

In the Sunset League:

Esperanza 196, Los Alamitos 209--Junior Pete Hergert shot par 35 for Esperanza (8-3, 3-0) at Yorba Linda Country Club. It was the third consecutive day Hergert shot 35.

In Sea View League boys’ tennis:

Woodbridge 16, Irvine 2--Adam Artunian swept in singles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, for host Woodbridge (6-3, 2-1), ranked second in the county.

In Garden Grove League softball:

Pacifica 3, Santiago 0--Junior Dara Tovias (2-0) pitched a no-hitter, facing the minimum for third-ranked Pacifica (13-1, 4-1). Amanda Freed’s two-run home run keyed the Mariners’ three-run fifth.
