Glendale Wins, Holds First Place, Shows Arcadia Who’s Boss, 6-0

Senior left-hander Bryan Chan pitched a five-hitter and Fernando Rios had a run-scoring double as Glendale High remained in sole possession of first place in the Pacific League with a 6-0 victory over Arcadia on Friday at Glendale.

The victory moved Glendale (8-1, 6-1 in league play) 1 1/2 games ahead of Arcadia (10-5, 4-2).

Chan (3-1), who lost to Arcadia earlier this season, had two strikeouts and one walk.

Rios provided the Dynamiters with the only run they needed with a first-inning double that drove home Jon Walton from first base.

Muir 1, Hoover 0--Bryan Olson allowed only one hit but balked with a runner at third in the fourth inning and the Mustangs won a Pacific League game at Muir.

Olson struck out 10 and walked three for the Tornadoes (5-7, 2-5).

Kennedy 14, Mountain View (Utah) 1--Derrick Morse struck out six in four innings for the Golden Cougars (13-2) in a Bishop Gorman tournament game in Las Vegas.

Morse (7-0) had three singles to pace a 13-hit attack for Kennedy, ranked second in The Times’ regional poll.

Las Vegas Bishop Gorman 10, Highland 0--Joe Chavez’s double was the only hit for the Bulldogs (5-9) in a pool-play game of the Bishop Gorman tournament in Las Vegas.

The game was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Jim Roban struck out five and walked six for Bishop Gorman (17-0), ranked 19th by Baseball America.

Vista 5, North Hollywood 2--Cesar Soto was two for two but the Huskies (9-9) lost a Bishop Gorman tournament game in eight innings.

Abraham Montiel went the distance for North Hollywood, striking out 11 and walking five.

Vista scored two unearned runs in the seventh inning, sending the game to extra innings.

Sylmar 7, Taft 4--Albert Palma had four hits and drove in two runs for the Spartans (10-3) in the Bishop Gorman tournament.

Pacific Hills 9, Oakwood 6--Neil Kohan hit a two-run home run in the first inning for Oakwood (0-5) but was the losing pitcher in a nonleague game.

Avalon 11, Faith Baptist 10--Ryan Long (1-3) allowed three runs in the seventh inning on a two-run home run, a single and a double in a nonleague game at Avalon.

Cisco Prado had three hits and drove in five runs for Faith Baptist. Rudy Mendoza added three hits and scored three runs.

Fontana 13, Antelope Valley 4--Two Antelope Valley errors in the bottom of the first inning led to five unearned runs in a nonleague game at Fontana.

The key blow came when Chris Stevens singled to center field and the ball scooted past John Elizondo for a three-base error, allowing three runs to score and giving Fontana a 4-2 lead.

Antelope Valley (8-6) played without first baseman Charlie Cook, who suffered a sprained ankle in a recreational basketball game on Thursday. Cook had a .429 batting average and led the team with 19 RBIs.

Antelope Valley scored twice in the top of the first on Anthony Barton’s double.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Fullerton 7, Mission 2--The Free Spirit (11-16) committed seven errors in its second game of round-robin play in the Fullerton tournament at Fullerton College.

Rusty Jenkins pitched seven innings, allowing only five hits and one earned run, but took the loss.

Earlier in the day the Free Spirit defeated Riverside, 10-6, at Riverside as Danny Arguello pitched seven innings of two-hit ball and struck out seven.

Art Diaz had two hits with three RBIs and three runs.

HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL

Montclair Prep 17, Oakwood 0--Brandi Cohen pitched a no-hitter with six strikeouts in a nonleague game at Oakwood.

Thousand Oaks 4, Fort Pierce Central 1--Erika Hanson’s two-run triple in the second inning helped send the Lancers (8-2) into the semifinals in the Kissimmee tournament in Florida.

Fort Pierce Central, ranked fifth in Florida, ruined a no-hitter for Jennifer Sharron (7-2) with a home run in the seventh.

Sharron struck out 11.

Justine Rachlin had two hits for the Lancers, and Shannon Foster tripled and scored a run.

The Lancers will face Naples Barron Collier, ranked third in Florida, in today’s semifinals.
