Buttell Gives Mission Double Vision in Oxnard’s 12-2 Win

Matt Buttell had four hits and drove in three runs Wednesday as Oxnard College routed Mission, 12-2, in a Western State Conference baseball game at Mission.

Buttell, from Camarillo High, hit three doubles.

Teammate Raudel Flores, from Hueneme High, had three hits and two runs batted in.

Starter Brian Downing (6-0), allowed five hits and two earned runs in seven innings for the Condors (22-6, 13-2 in conference play). He struck out two and walked one.

Rusty Jenkins and Art Diaz had run-scoring doubles for the Free Spirit (12-19, 4-11).

Pierce 15, Santa Barbara 7--Dave Cipolla had four hits, including two doubles and a home run, and two RBIs for the Brahmas (20-9, 10-5) in a WSC game at Pierce.

Kirk Mayer added three hits, including a double and a home run, and drove in five runs for Pierce.

SOFTBALL

Ventura 13, Valley 0--Debi Vasquez and Maria Gonzalez each doubled and tripled for the Pirates in a Western State Conference game at Valley.

Vanessa Zapata recorded the only hit for Valley in the second inning. Silvia Landaverde took the loss after giving up 12 runs and 14 hits in 2 1/3 innings.

Pierce 8, Moorpark 1--Kelly Lovato (22-4-1) pitched a two-hitter for the Brahmas (22-4-1, 8-2) in a WSC game at Moorpark (5-18, 5-5).

WOMEN’S TENNIS

CS Fullerton 7, CS Northridge 2--Asa Arola won at No. 2 singles and Lilian Ore won at No. 5 singles, but the Matadors (8-12) fell to the visiting Titans at Northridge.

Cal Lutheran 5, Caltech 4--The Regals (6-6-1, 3-3) won the third-through-sixth singles and the No. 3 doubles matches to defeat the Beavers (6-8, 2-4) in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match at Cal Lutheran.

Winning in singles were Liza Tan, Siana-Lea Gildard, Cammy Idler and Becky Ingrid. The tandem of Jill Embree and Karrie Matson earned the doubles victory.
