Rosary’s Leonhardt Commits to UCI

Rosary’s Robyn Leonhardt has signed a letter of intent to play women’s soccer at UC Irvine next season, her father said Wednesday.

Leonhardt, a goalkeeper, had 10 consecutive shutouts this season and gave up only one goal in Golden West League play.

Rick Chessman, Servite pitcher and third baseman, signed a letter of intent to play at Pepperdine, Friar Coach Tom Tereschuk said.

Brian Pharris, a two-time All-Southern Section driver from the Villa Park water polo team, signed to play at USC, Spartan assistant coach John Kulisich said.

Marina’s Sonya Bryant signed a letter of intent to play women’s basketball at New Mexico, according to Marina Coach Pete Bonny.

New Mexico also received a letter of intent from Lainie Horne, a center fielder for Mater Dei softball team, her mother said.

Danielle Wilson, Esperanza softball pitcher, has signed a letter of intent with Florida, Dennis Wilson, her father, said.

Corona del Mar tennis player Alissa Scott has signed a letter of intent with Southern Methodist, her mother said. Scott is a two-time Times all-county player.

Laura Wilson, a volleyball and track and field standout at Newport Harbor, signed a letter of intent with William & Mary. Wilson competes in the discus and shotput.

Ryan Donovan, a golfer from Esperanza, has signed a letter of intent with San Diego State, Kathy Donovan, his mother, said.

Four county athletic teams finished first in the annual Southern Section Academic Awards.

Santa Margarita’s baseball team (3.57 GPA), Edison’s field hockey team (3.14), Brea Olinda’s gymnastics team (3.45) and Brethren Christian’s wrestling team (3.42) had the highest team GPAs in college-prep courses in the first semester of 1995-96 school year.
