Harvard Breaks Racket String

No. 1 singles player David Brown and all three doubles teams won two of three sets as Harvard-Westlake High edged Santa Barbara, 10-8, handing the Dons their first defeat in three seasons in a nonleague boys’ tennis match Thursday at the Studio City Tennis and Golf Center.

Santa Barbara has won eight Southern Section titles in a row and is ranked No. 1 in Division I. The Dons (14-1) were without their top player, Adam Webster, who is competing in the Easter Bowl National Junior Championships.

Harvard-Westlake (11-1) competes in Division III.

Brown was the only singles player to win two sets, and the No. 3 doubles team of Mark Tronstein and Steven Kims rallied from a 5-2 deficit to beat Santa Barbara’s No. 2 team of Sean Bill and Marc Longpre, 7-6 (7-5).

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

Royal 14, Rio Mesa 1--Matt Pitstick hit a three-run home run and pitched a five-hitter for the Highlanders (14-1) in the third round of the Dos Pueblos tournament.

Pitstick had two hits and four runs batted in. Earlier in the day, Royal defeated Santa Barbara, 7-3, as Bryant Leppard (3-0) went the distance and hit a double.

BIRMINGHAM TOURNAMENT

Channel Islands 7, Cleveland 5--Daniel Tuando, Jared Krehbiel and Maurice Whatley each had two hits for Channel Islands in the Gold Division fifth-place game.

Krehbiel drove in three runs and Tuando scored twice for Channel Islands (11-9), which held a 7-0 advantage going into the bottom of the seventh but saw the Cavaliers (11-7) rally for five runs on three hits, three walks, an error and a hit batter.

Vince Kolbe hit a two-run single to spark Cleveland’s late rally. Casey Roth and Ruben Delgado each had two hits.

El Camino Real 10, Barstow 2--Mike Conn hit five singles and drove in a run for the Conquistadores (10-8) in the Gold Division third-place game at Grant High.

Poly 10, Newbury Park 3--Lucas La Touf had three hits and two RBIs for the Parrots in a consolation game.

Steve Guerrero drove in three runs and Travis McGivern drove in two runs for Poly (13-5).

Chris Thogersen had two hits for Newbury Park (8-6).

Quartz Hill 9, Hollywood 4--Parker Metheny drove in two runs for the Rebels (12-4), who finished fifth in the Blue Division.

San Clemente 11, Birmingham 3--Mike Wanders hit a grand slam and drove in five runs and hit a grand slam for the Tritons (7-9-2) in the Blue Division third-place game.

Corey Tolmasoff had two hits, two RBIs and scored two runs for the Tritons.

Buckley 9, Pacific Hills 0--Jeremy Shapiro doubled and had three RBIs, and Josh Rothman drove in two runs and was the winning pitcher for the Griffins in a nonleague game at Buckley.

Rothman (3-0) pitched three hitless innings and struck out six.

Thomas Devoss had two hits, including a run-scoring triple, and Jack Burnside singled and drove in two runs for Buckley (6-2).

HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL

Royal 2, Chino 0--Leah Barroso and Rachel Alcorn each had an RBI for the Highlanders in a first-round game of the Arroyo Grande tournament.

Kaelynn Jones (5-5) struck out 11, walked one and allowed only two hits.

Dos Pueblos 5, Ventura 1--Marie Gensler (8-5) pitched a one-hitter, striking out four and walking four, as the Chargers (8-5, 5-1) scored five unearned runs in a Channel League game at Dos Pueblos.

Crystal Gravelin (3-13) threw a six-hitter for Ventura (3-15, 1-5).

Montclair Prep 5, Village Christian 0--Brandi Cohen pitched a one-hitter for the Mounties (14-3) in a nonleague game at Montclair Prep. Cohen has not allowed an earned run in 45 innings.

Stephanie Aron had three hits, two RBIs and two stolen bases and Tamra Freedman added two hits and two RBIs for Montclair Prep.

Jackie Aranda went the distance for the Crusaders (12-4) and Sandra Mahinay had their lone hit.

Burroughs 6, Burbank 1--Chantel Jimenez led the Indians (10-5, 1-1) with three hits and an RBI in a Foothill League game at Burbank.

Jimenez also scored three runs and hit two doubles. Becky Simpson added two hits and two RBIs.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Canyons 5, Santa Barbara City 1--Freshman right-hander Chris Baker threw a four-hitter with eight strikeouts as the Cougars won a Western State Conference game at Santa Barbara.

Baker (5-5) walked none and went the distance for his fifth complete game in a row.

Kasey Canale and Justin Bunch each had two hits for the Cougars (17-15, 12-4) and Bunch also drove in a run.

Ventura 7, Mission 6--Jason Kimble’s two-run double with one out in the ninth inning gave the Pirates (14-16, 7-9) a WSC victory at Ventura.

Kimble finished with four hits, while Jamie Cerna had three hits for Mission.

Cuesta 5, Pierce 1--The Cougars (23-6, 14-2) snapped Pierce’s seven-game winning streak and remained tied with Oxnard for the North Division lead in a WSC game at Cuesta.

Casey Cote led Pierce (20-10, 10-6) with two hits, one of them a double, and scored the Brahmas’ only run. Brandon Murphy added two hits.
