Foothill, ranked No. 1 in the Southern Section a year ago before getting knocked out in the quarterfinals, again is expected to be the top-seeded team when the Division I softball playoff pairings are released Monday.
Foothill (26-2) won its sixth consecutive Century League title, and by virtue of its victory over Mater Dei (25-1), the Knights are likely to be No. 1. Mater Dei, whose only loss was to Pacifica, should be the No. 2 team.
Marmonte League champion Newbury Park (21-5-1) will probably be seeded third, meaning Garden Grove League champion Pacifica (24-3) should be No. 4. If Pacifica isn’t No. 4, it will be No. 5, and Camarillo (20-2-1), the second-place team from the Marmonte League, will be No. 4.
Other league champions such as the Channel League’s San Marcos (19-5), Sunset League’s Fountain Valley (17-9) or Empire League’s Kennedy (16-7) could be among the top eight.
At least 16 county teams are expected to compete in Division I.
Sea View League champion Woodbridge (24-5), which has won 15 straight league titles, will be the top-seeded team in Division II. The Warriors are the defending champion and have been the top-ranked team in the division most of the year.
Calvary Chapel (18-9), which won its first Olympic League title by ending Cerritos Valley Christian’s four-year reign, should be the top-seeded team in Division V--the Eagles were ranked No. 1 in the section rankings last week and haven’t lost.
Orange League champion Brea Olinda (18-7) has the best chance to be seeded in Division III, and Liberty Christian (11-5) the best chance to be seeded in Division VI; they were ranked eighth and ninth, respectively, in last week’s division rankings.
