Tustin Gets Out of Some Late Trouble to Advance

Greg Garcia (6-3) allowed two hits in five innings as Tustin defeated Cerritos Gahr, 3-1 in a first-round Southern Section Division II baseball game Friday at Gahr.

Heath Bell picked up the save by getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth.

Rick Gonzalez had two hits for Tustin (17-9), which will play Temecula Valley in the second round.

In other Division II games:

Bell Gardens 5, Foothill 4--Bell Gardens (21-4-1) won on a two-run squeeze play in the bottom of the third.

Foothill’s starter Tyler Lang walked five in 2 2/3 innings, including two with the bases loaded in the second.

Ben Gonzales (10-1) gave up four runs on six hits in the first two innings for Bell Gardens and then allowed only one hit the rest of the way. Foothill finished 16-8.

Canyon 7, Riverside J.W. North 3--Troy Mills was four for four with a triple, double and one RBI for Canyon. Jeff Leuenberger pitched a four-hitter for the Comanches (23-3).

Moreno Valley Canyon Springs 9, Magnolia 1--Magnolia finished its season 18-5.

Fullerton 6, La Verne Damien 5--Rudy Vijar doubled to lead off the seventh and scored when Michael Garner’s bunt was thrown away by Damien’s third baseman. Garner went to third on the error and then scored the winning run on a balk.

Mario Ramirez, Josh Leach, Vijar and Garner each had two hits for the Indians (20-5-1).

San Luis Obispo 7, Westminster 4--Westminster finished the season 16-10.

Servite 2, City of Industry Workman 0--Rick Chessman (9-3) pitched a one-hitter, giving up only a double in the seventh inning. He struck out seven and walked three for Servite (20-7).

In Division III:

Irvine 8, Pacifica 2--Irvine used an eight-run sixth inning to advance against University. Mike Walas hit a two-run single and Darren Bell added a two-run triple for Irvine (16-9-1).

Pacifica stranded 15 runners. Bryan Krill gave up six hits and walked four for Irvine.

La Quinta 6, Norco 1--Gerald Laird was three for four with two doubles and two runs scored and Jhamal Dawkins had two hits and three RBIs for second-seeded La Quinta (22-6).

Laguna Hills 4, Saugus 2--Tony Milo hit his eighth home run of the season to help Laguna Hills to the second round against El Toro.

University 5, Bolsa Grande 2--Jeremy Stenson’s single drove in Brett Lockwood in the fifth for University (16-11) to break a 2-2 tie. Mike Gamble retired the last seven batters for his second save.

Upland 7, Sonora 6--The defending Division II champions advance. Sonora ended its season 20-5-1.

In Division V:

Calvary Chapel 6, Sierra Madre Maranatha 5 (9)--Ryan Blood doubled in Dallas Cruz with the tying run in the ninth and Gabe Gerhardt followed with a game-winning double for Calvary Chapel (19-5).

In Division VI:

Liberty Christian 17, Canoga Park Coutin 2--Brian Davis was three for four with two RBIs for Liberty Christian (14-6). Teammate Ray Cook also had three hits and two RBIs.

Liberty Christian will play Woodcrest Christian in the second round.
