Ventura County All-Stars Put on Level Playing Field

Ventura County’s finest high school players have been divided for a senior all-star softball game tonight at 6 at Borchard Park.

Organizers invited 42 seniors from Agoura and Oak Park in the east to Port Hueneme and Ojai in the west.

But this is no East-West showdown because organizers want to make it as fair as possible. Players from the same high school teams will compete on the same all-star team, but the players have been divided evenly by position and strength.

The White team will be coached by Newbury Park Coach Mike Morgan and Pete Ackerman, his assistant. Oak Park Coach Roger Newall and Dave Perrone, his assistant, will coach the Blue team.

“It’s mostly a show-off deal,” Morgan said. "[But] it should be a good game. We’ve drawn some pretty big crowds for this.”

There will be a home-run contest beginning at 5 p.m.

Pitchers for the White team include Kristi Fox of Newbury Park, Jennifer Baltruzak of La Reina and Kaelynn Jones of Royal.

Fox (17-4), the Marmonte League’s pitcher of the year who is headed to Virginia on scholarship, finished with an 0.21 earned-run average. Baltruzak (12-7) led the Regents with an 0.62 ERA. Jones (8-9) compiled a 1.44 ERA.

Blue team pitchers include Melanie Richardson of Camarillo, Kelly DeArman of Westlake and Kaylene Boldroff of Oak Park.

Richardson (10-1), the area’s best off-speed pitcher, allowed only three earned runs in 92 innings. DeArman (10-9), a left-hander headed to Nevada Las Vegas, had an 0.62 ERA. Boldroff (11-8) led Oak Park to the Southern Section quarterfinals with an ERA of 0.83.
