Bryan Paul of Moorpark High passed for two touchdowns and ran for another, all in the second half, to lead the East to a 19-8 come-from-behind victory in the 23rd Ventura County all-star football game Friday night at Ventura High.

Paul, selected the county’s player of the year among small schools last season, spent most of the game scrambling away from a fierce pass rush and was sacked three times for 12 yards in losses.

But Paul rushed for 51 yards in 15 carries and was nine of 17 passing for 168 yards.

“They blitzed a lot, but my line did a great job,” Paul said. “We started passing the ball and my receivers made me look great. We were definitely the underdogs, but we came through.”

Paul connected with Moorpark teammate David Burns for a 20-yard scoring play to cap a 78-yard third-quarter drive and narrow the West’s lead to 8-6.

Paul sustained the drive with a 13-yard scramble on third and 10 near midfield. He also connected with DaJuan Hawkins of Newbury Park for a 34-yard completion on third and 15.

Early in the fourth quarter, Paul ran three yards for a touchdown to give the East a 12-8 lead.

Three minutes later, Paul found Edward Patterson of Newbury Park over the middle for a 60-yard scoring play.

Patterson, who caught two passes for 78 yards, was selected the game’s most valuable player. Paul was selected the East’s offensive back of the game.

Ronney Jenkins of Hueneme, who rushed for 61 yards in 18 carries, was selected offensive back of the game for the West.

Jenkins provided the West with its only points by breaking loose on a swing pass from quarterback Glenn Dudley of Buena in the second quarter and running 32 yards for a touchdown. Dudley ran for the two-point conversion.

Dudley completed 12 of 17 passes for 130 yards. Kyle Schommer of Ventura was seven of 10 for 42 yards.

Jenkins caught four passes for 60 yards. Donell Wickett of Ventura had 11 catches for 70 yards.

The West defense spent most of the first half tormenting Paul, who was sacked twice.
