Villa Park
Coach: Sue Gardiner (third year).
1995: 20-0, 10-0 in the Century League; defeated Laguna Beach for the Southern Section Division II title, 9-9, 72-71 in games.
Key returners: Katey Becker, second-team Times’ all-county, No. 2 singles, Jr.; Jasmine Cheung, No. 2 and No. 3 singles, So.; Anny Chien, No. 3 doubles, Jr.; Faye DeVera, No. 1 singles, two-time Times’ county player of the year, Sr.; Clare Gries, No. 1 doubles, Jr.; Talline Kojian, No. 2 doubles, Sr.; Sharon Lester, No. 3 singles, Jr.; Shawna Lerer, No. 2 doubles, Jr.; Ami Moran, No. 3 doubles, Sr.
Key newcomers: Stephanie Chang, No. 1 doubles or singles, Fr.
Outlook: Villa Park figures to take its lumps early with Becker out of the lineup for at least a month because of a hip injury. “That won’t bother this team,” Gardiner said. “Being undefeated is not that big a deal to them. Having some good matches and playing good tennis is more important.” But if Becker can get healthy by the playoffs, the Spartans have a chance to be better than last year. All but one starter returns and Chang should easily make up for that loss, so another section title is a possibility.
