OUTLOOK

The Wildcats have a proven quarterback, but now they need to build a team around him. First, they’ll have to find a tailback who can replace Jerome Owens, who rushed for nearly 1,000 yards last year at 7.3 yards a carry. Owens, who dropped out of school shortly after the season ended, had one of the best rushing averages in the county. Kalcevich, meanwhile, should be one of the top quarterbacks in the area. He has the arm and if he can hook up with wide receiver Freeze or Bravo and Vargas out of the backfield, the Wildcats should pile up some yardage. He passed for 1,292 yards and 13 touchdowns last year, giving the Wildcats a more balanced attack than they had expected. Looney says his offensive line is a big question, though, and that’s a worry for Kalcevich. If he’s forced to scramble because the offensive line can’t protect him, Brea may struggle. In the league race, Looney is optimistic, saying Savanna, Western and Brea will fight it out for first place.
