SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Los Amigos and Santa Ana entered Thursday’s nonleague football game with 0-2 records, but the two teams came with different goals. Los Amigos, considered a likely playoff team in the Garden Grove League, was hoping to win after two close losses. Santa Ana, outscored, 75-0, in its first two games, was just hoping to survive.

The Lobos looked like a playoff team after a 42-0 victory over the outmanned Saints at Garden Grove High. Los Amigos scored on four of its first five possessions to take a 28-0 lead midway through the second quarter.

Najja Kee led the way, scoring on runs of 17 and 12 yards in the first quarter, then adding a 32-yard scoring run on his only carry of the second half. Kee finished with 144 yards in 12 carries.

The Lobos added a final touchdown in the fourth quarter, when reserves put together a 78-yard drive. Thong Nguyen, a starting wide receiver who finished the game at quarterback, scored on a four-yard bootleg with 3:39 to play.

Santa Ana did not pick up a first down until midway through the second quarter, when the Saints already trailed by 28. They put together their best offensive effort of the night on that drive and eventually had first and goal.

However, Omar Gomez was stopped at the one-foot line on third down from the 2, and then was stonewalled again on fourth down.

“It feels good,” Lobo coach Roger Takahashi said. “It’s what we needed. But we still have some work to do, and we’ll have to evaluate. We had some bad penalties and [three] fumbles, and those are the things that could cost us a tight game.”
