Vann, Lins honored: Elihu Vann of Ventura College and David Lins of Valley were named Western State Conference offensive players of the week, along with Santa Barbara quarterback J.T. Stone.

Moorpark linebacker Terrance Petty and Ventura nose guard David Furst were named defensive co-players of the week.

In the Foothill Conference, Antelope Valley’s Lafayette Bailey was one of six players honored. He rushed for 249 yards and four touchdowns in the Marauders’ 50-12 victory over Rio Hondo last Saturday.

Vann rushed for 190 yards and two touchdowns in Ventura’s 41-0 victory over Compton and Lins passed for 302 yards and two touchdowns in Valley’s 24-14 upset of Bakersfield.

Petty had seven tackles, three sacks and returned a fumble for a touchdown in Moorpark’s 38-20 victory over L.A. Southwest. Furst had three tackles and returned an interception for a 50-yard touchdown against Compton.

Valley’s on the rise: Valley College is ranked 12th in the state’s junior college football poll.

The Monarchs moved up seven slots after beating then-No. 2 Bakersfield, 24-14, last Saturday.

Quick start: Robin Remmel, a freshman forward on the Pepperdine women’s soccer team, had been on the field all of 16 seconds Sunday when she scored to defeat San Francisco, 1-0, in a West Coast Conference match at Pepperdine.

The goal in the 82nd minute was Remmel’s first college score.
