SCORECARD / COUNTY HIGHLIGHTS FROM WEEK 4

Share

PERFECT TIMING

El Toro Coach Mike Milner and Aliso Niguel Coach Joe Wood agreed before their game Friday to play the game under the old change-of-possession rule where the clock starts as soon as the ball is set instead of waiting for the center snap. The game still took 2 hours 20 minutes.

At least three other Friday games were played under the old rule: Marina-Westminster, Mission Viejo-Sunny Hills and La Verne Lutheran-Southern California Christian.

Mission Viejo Coach Bill Denny petitioned for a return to last year’s rule before his game.

“I’ve been faxing requests to the Orange County Officials Assn. as well as to a lot of the other schools about my concerns about the new rule for timeouts,” Denny said. “I have a lot of players going two ways and some were getting sick in the fourth quarter.”

Sunny Hills Coach Tim Devaney agreed: “I have too many two-way players and this is not the NCAA.”

ON THE RECORD

‘The big Monarch in the sky must have been watching out for me.’

--Bruce Rollinson, coach of top-ranked Mater Dei, which fought off a last-minute rally by Irvine to escape with a 35-30 victory Friday.
