Okokhere Is OK for Cal Lutheran

A goal by Alvede Okokhere with 2 minutes 18 seconds to play lifted the Cal Lutheran men’s soccer team to a 2-1 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory Saturday over Claremont-Mudd at Thousand Oaks.

Cal Lutheran (9-5, 5-0 in conference) led at halftime, 1-0, on a goal by Sebastian Alvarado at 26:35.

The Stags (9-4, 4-1) responded on Nathan Shafer’s goal at the start of the second half.

Okokhere’s goal was his 16th of the season.

Kyle Bilowitz stopped nine shots for Claremont-Mudd.

Adam Pearce and Ryan Kaufman split time in the net for the Kingsmen. Pearce had six saves and Kaufman made one.

The Master’s 4, Chapman 0--Timo Scheunemann scored his 10th goal of the season for The Master’s (12-3-1) in a nonconference match at Newhall.

Scheunemann went one on one with Chapman goalkeeper Paul Gerdis and hit the corner two minutes into the second half.

Scheunemann’s score came on the heels of a goal by Jared Kira in the 43rd minute and followed goals by Jan-Erik Benitez and Joel Murphy.

Master’s goalkeeper Sean Parsons had two saves. Gerdis had six for Chapman (4-7).

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Cal Lutheran 3, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 0--Jill Simmer scored twice and Holly Roepke added a goal as the Regals (13-2, 4-0) won a SCIAC match at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

Kim Shaffer had 12 saves for the Athenas (3-6-2, 2-4-2), while Amy Walz stopped one shot for Cal Lutheran.

Cal Lutheran’s SCIAC record is 67-1-1 since 1991.

Chapman 2, The Master’s 1--Sarah Essex scored the only goal for the The Master’s (3-9-1) on an assist from Heather Halstead in the 57th minute of a nonconference match at Chapman (8-6).

Kim Wyer scored for Chapman in the 36th and 78th minutes.

MEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Invitational--Sophomore Javier Ramirez placed ninth and junior Oswaldo Servin was 10th for Cal State Northridge, which finished sixth in the team standings with 156 points.

Ramirez clocked 25 minutes 52 seconds over the 8,000-meter course, with Servin at 25:53.

Adams State (Colo.) edged UC Santa Barbara, 54-64, for the team title.

Santa Barbara Invitational--Ventura freshman Miguel Galindo placed second at Shoreline Park to pace the Pirates to a fourth-place finish.

Galindo clocked 21:39 over the four-mile course to finish eight seconds behind Phil Gonzalez of Pasadena City.

Gonzalez, a 1995 graduate of Crescenta Valley High, led Pasadena to a 51-62 victory over second-place Rancho Santiago.

L.A. Trade Tech was third with 69 points, followed by Ventura with 125.

WOMEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Invitational--Junior Jamie Whitmore of Cal State Northridge finished 25th to pace the Matadors to an 11th-place finish with 294 points.

Whitmore clocked 19:01 over the 5,000-meter course, but no other Matadors were in the top 60 runners.

Santa Barbara Invitational--Collette Davis of Ventura placed eighth at Shoreline Park as the Pirates finished fourth with 158 points.

Davis timed 20:30 over the three-mile course.

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Invitational--Rio Mesa’s one-two punch of seniors Ronald Almaguer and Scott Johnsen finished sixth and seventh in the Division I race to pace the Spartans to a third-place finish.

Almaguer timed 17:02 over the 5,000-meter course and Johnsen clocked 17:03 as Rio Mesa totaled 95 points.

Madera edged Rolling Hills Estate Peninsula, 43-50, to win the team title.

In the Division IV race, junior Sean Tallungan of Notre Dame placed fifth in 17:21 to help the Knights to a second-place total of 67 points. Livermore Granada won with 63.

GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Invitational--Louisville juniors Kelly Harrington and Erin Spaulding placed first and third to lead the Royals to victory in the Division III race.

Harrington clocked 20:31 over the 5,000-meter course and Spaulding ran 21:01 as Louisville, defending State Division IV champion, totaled 30 points to 45 for runner-up Atascadero.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Magnet League Classic--Sherman Oaks CES finished first and Valley Alternative was second in the round-robin pool portion of the tournament at Balboa Park.

Valley Alternative freshman setter Karla Gonzalez had 13 assists and has 129 for the season, breaking the school record of 121.

Sherman Oaks CES and Valley Alternative will meet for the championship next Saturday, with the Sherman Oaks CES junior varsity and Foshay Learning Center playing for third place.

Lighthouse Church d. Thousand Oaks Hillcrest, 17-15, 15-8, 7-15, 15-8--Beth Scribner had seven kills and Sarah Hamilton had 12 assists for Lighthouse Church in a nonleague match at Lighthouse.

Noel Hamilton, had five aces for Lighthouse Church.
