CSUN Upsets No. 18 Notre Dame

Nancy Ma had 21 kills and a career-high 26 digs as Cal State Northridge surprised 18th-ranked Notre Dame, 15-12, 13-15, 15-12, 15-9, in a nonconference match Tuesday night at Northridge.

Getty Dimitrova also had 21 kills for the Matadors (11-9), who lost starting setter Heather Hofmans to a twisted ankle in the second game. Ellie Flato replaced Hofmans and made 23 assists. Hofmans had 30 assists.

Northridge had a season-high 89 team digs, and Amy Gillis recorded her first double-double with 13 kills and 15 digs.

Jaimie Lee had 16 kills and 18 digs for the Fighting Irish (13-6).

Cal Lutheran d. Whittier, 15-2, 15-2, 15-9--Jennifer Pappas had seven kills as the Regals (14-3, 10-0) needed only 59 minutes to win their 23rd consecutive Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match and clinch at least a tie for the conference title.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Thousand Oaks d. Channel Islands, 15-12, 15-3, 15-4--Marie Middleton had 10 kills and Shelly Payne added 12 assists and 18 service points--including 12 in a row--for the Lancers (7-3, 6-3) in a Marmonte League match.

Littlerock d. Palmdale 16-14, 12-15, 12-15, 15-0, 15-1--Crystal Trumble had 12 kills, 16 digs and seven blocks for the Lobos (5-6, 2-2) in a Golden League match.

Notre Dame d. Chaminade, 15-9, 15-7, 15-2--Hilda Osmanian had 25 assists, 10 digs, seven aces and four blocks for the Knights (9-2, 4-1) in a Mission League match at Notre Dame.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Ventura 2, Moorpark 0--Sarah Roach scored in the 33rd minute and Allyson Munday scored in the 79th for Ventura in a Western State Conference match at Ventura.

Pirate sweeper Joy Barry assisted on both goals. Munday leads Ventura (12-2, 7-1) with 13 goals.

Ventura, a first-year program, outshot Moorpark, a traditional WSC power, 14-10.

Moorpark (10-2, 7-1) played without standout sweeper Marisa Capra, who was ejected in Monday’s 1-0 conference victory over Santa Monica.

Bakersfield 4, Glendale 2--Amanda Hofmann and Sandra Rosales scored and Jennifer D’Entremont had five saves for the Vaqueros (3-6-1, 1-5-1) in a WSC loss at Glendale.

MEN’S SOCCER

Mission 1, Moorpark 1--Jorge Trejo scored for Mission (6-3-5, 1-0-1) and Mike Sanders scored for Moorpark (5-0-4, 1-0-1) in a Western State Conference match at Pierce College.

Trejo scored his eighth goal in the 18th minute off a pass from Luis Mesta. Minutes before, a penalty shot by Mission’s Carlos Cabrera was blocked by Raider goalkeeper Justin Hanover.

Sanders scored in the 72nd minute off a pass from Joey Medaglia.

Hawaii Pacific 2, The Master’s 2--Defender Andrew Williams scored with six minutes to play off a pass from Joel Murphy as the Mustangs (12-3-2) pulled out a nonconference tie with the Sea Warriors (14-1-1) at The Master’s.

Williams, the Mustang sweeper, was sent forward late in the match with Master’s trailing, 2-1. Jan-Erik Benitez scored in the 22nd minute for Master’s.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Granada Hills 7, Cleveland 0--No. 3 singles player Karen Fung and all three of Granada Hills’ doubles teams remained unbeaten this season with victories in a Northwest Valley Conference match.

Fung won her match by a 8-7 (7-3) score and Karyl-Lyn Sanderson and Julie Kang won the No. 1 doubles match, 8-3, for Granada Hills (9-0, 6-0).

Westlake 13, Royal 5--Helena Horak, Erin Smith and Katy Smith each swept three sets for the Warriors (10-2, 8-1).

Erin Smith’s 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 sweep extended her Marmonte League win streak to 69 consecutive sets.

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Notre Dame 15, Harvard-Westlake 50--Junior Sean Tallungan clocked 17 minutes 48 seconds over the three-mile course at Tree People Park to lead a Notre Dame (5-0, 5-0) sweep of the first seven places in a Mission League meet.
