Just a second: In July, Pepperdine basketball Coach Lorenzo Romar said the Waves were in the running for “16 of the top 20” high school seniors in Southern California.

Now that many of those players have made commitments--none to Pepperdine--Romar says it’s unlikely the Waves will sign anyone during the early one-week signing period that starts Nov. 13.

“We didn’t get any of them,” Romar said. “We came in second for a lot of guys, but second doesn’t count in recruiting.”

Romar, who built a reputation at UCLA as a first-rate recruiter under Jim Harrick, said Pepperdine probably will fill its two available scholarships in the spring, after the season.

Nothing doing: Things are getting worse for the second-year Cal State Northridge women’s soccer team, which has lost four consecutive matches by a combined score of 13-0.

The Matadors (4-13-1), who have been outscored, 47-18, allowed Loyola Marymount to score only 13 seconds into a 5-0 loss Sunday.

And after they lost, 2-0, Tuesday to Fresno State, the Matadors’ scoreless streak stands at 379 minutes.
