Costa Mesa Defeats University

IRVINE — Vince Hamade scored two touchdowns to lead Costa Mesa to a 17-7 Pacific Coast League victory over University Thursday at Irvine High.
Hamade rushed for 161 yards in 20 carries to help the Mustangs (5-3, 2-1 in league) overcome a 7-0 halftime deficit and move into sole possession of third place in the league.
Kelvin Murray led University (3-5, 1-2) in rushing with 105 yards in 21 carries.
University took a 7-0 lead on a one-yard touchdown run by quarterback Damian DeFeo with 11:58 left in the half, capping a 15-play, 85-yard drive.
Costa Mesa tied the score, 7-7, on a 28-yard touchdown run by Hamade with 2:28 remaining in the third quarter.
The Mustangs moved out to a 14-7 lead on a 10-yard touchdown run by Hamade with 7:13 left in the game.
The touchdown was set up by Steve Herzog’s 41-yard run, which moved the ball to the Trojan 19.
Costa Mesa took a 17-7 lead on a 26-yard field goal by Matt Peca with 2:22 left.
University had one more chance to score when it advanced the ball to the Costa Mesa 21-yard line.
Needing two scores, the Trojans went for a field goal on third down, but Chris Grey’s 39-yard attempt was blocked.
The Trojans recovered and on fourth down, DeFeo’s pass fell incomplete with 16 seconds left.
