Camy Smith found Will Demps for a 70-yard touchdown pass play with nine minutes left and Highland High upset No. 2-ranked Antelope Valley, 7-0, Friday night in a Golden League game at Quartz Hill High.

It marked Highland’s first-ever victory over the two-time defending league champions.

The touchdown and point-after gave the Bulldogs (6-3, 2-1) more points than they scored in any of their previous games against Antelope Valley (5-2, 1-1).

Although Highland’s touchdown came by the pass, it was on the ground where the game was controlled.

Highland sophomore Brandon McElvaine had his best game of the season, carrying 24 times for 103 yards.

Antelope Valley’s Tony Walker, who came into the game averaging seven yards a carry, was stifled for 87 yards in 26 carries.

Always around Walker, it seemed, was linebacker Malachi Keddington, who had 15 tackles and recovered an Antelope Valley fumble on the Highland 15-yard line with 3:48 left.

Smith completed nine for 20 passes for 139 yards with two interceptions.

Demps had three receptions for 88 yards. Antelope Valley’s David Aranzubia missed field-goal attempts of 28, 42, 43 and 44 yards.
