Following The Master’s Plan, Mustangs Advance to Final, 4-1

The Master’s College defeated Westminster, 4-1, Saturday in an NAIA Far West Region Independent tournament men’s soccer match at Newhall.

Bryan Lee scored two goals for the top-seeded Mustangs (16-3-2, 10-2-1 in regional play), who also got goals from Timo Scheunemann and Paul Dojo to defeat the fourth-seeded Parsons (9-9-3, 3-5).

Master’s advances to Tuesday’s title match against second-seeded Hawaii Pacific, a 4-1 victor Saturday over third-seeded Dominican.

With a victory Tuesday, the Mustangs will play Nov. 16 in the Far West Region tournament at a site to be determined.

The regional tournament victor earns a berth in the 12-team national tournament, Nov. 25-30 in Birmingham, Ala.

Claremont-Mudd 6, Cal Lutheran 1--Aleude Okokhere tied the score, 1-1, in the 17th minute before the Kingsmen were routed in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoff match at Claremont.

Cal Lutheran (12-7, 8-2) finished in a three-way tie for the SCIAC title with Calremont-Mudd and Pomona-Pitzer, which beat Redlands in overtime, 2-1.

Okokhere’s 29th goal the season left him one shy of the Kingsmen record set by Per Roald in 1993.

MEN’S TENNIS

Southern California Regional--Brad Sceney of Pepperdine lost in the semifinals of singles but he won in the semifinal round of doubles.

Sceney and Troy Budgin defeated Henrik Wagner and Tim Haugland of Arizona, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) at UC Irvine.

Sceney and Budgin will face Kevin Kim and Eric Lin of UCLA today at noon in the final.

In the quarterfinals, Kim and Lin posted a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s Savan Zengian and Casey Wood, a former Granada Hills standout.

Sceney and Budgin scored a 6-4, 6-3 victory over UCLA’s Matt Breen and Jason Cook, a freshman from Woodland Hills.

MEN’S WATER POLO

UC Irvine 13, Pepperdine 4--The Waves were outscored in every quarter at Irvine, where Coach Ted Newland of the Anteaters celebrated the 601st victory of his career.

Chris Tildin scored three goals for Pepperdine (5-13), ranked No. 7 in the nation.

Omar Amr had four goals for No. 5 Irvine (12-6).

COLLEGE WRESTLING

Cal Poly tournament--Ati Conner’s championship in the 158-pound weight class helped Moorpark College win the junior college division team title at San Luis Obispo.

The Raiders finished with 65 points, 15 more than runner-up Fresno City.

Fred Molano (142) and Dan Ramirez (190) each placed second, and Matt Werner (134) and Gabe Roman (150) earned third-place medals for Moorpark.
